Academy of Art and Design Basel FHNW, Institute Experimental Design and Media Cultures
The teaching and research activities of the Academy of Design and Art Basel, part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), within the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM), focus on the development and communication of norm-critical, transversal, and post-disciplinary design practices. The thematic orientation of this role is aligned with the focal topics of IXDM labs Critical Media Lab and HyperWerk, and it is situated within the Transversal Design MA — a research-oriented, transdisciplinary master’s programme which explores social, ecological, political, and creative processes in their complex interdependencies. This is an exciting role for an enthusiastic self-starter who thrives in diverse, transdisciplinary settings, and has a passion for designing-otherwise across programme, community and curriculum in collaboration with creative and critical practitioners.
Your tasks
- Contributing to programme development and teaching on MA Transversal Design at IXDM
- Delivering seminars for 1st and 2nd Year MA students in collaboration with MA head and team
- Contributing to the design of creative and accessible teaching materials and curriculum
- Co-developing pedagogies, practices and infrastructures in the new field of Transversal Design
- Assisting with programme organisation and administration – to include core activities such as admissions, open days, thesis defense and student work-in-progress shows
- Providing pastoral care, guidance and feedback as part of the student mentorship programme
- Representing the programme to diverse publics in/around Basel and fostering its community
Your profile
You have a postgraduate degree (MA) and a doctorate (PhD) in an artistic, creative, critical or related field.
You also fulfil the following criteria:
- You are currently building a research, teaching and/or programme development profile as an emerging scholar - particularly in one or more of the following areas: Ecosocial Justice; Transfeminist, Posthuman, Decolonial and/or Critical Race Theory; Critical Design; Critical Pedagogy; Community Organising.
- You can demonstrate delivering high-quality research, community, design and/or creative practices.
- You are in the process of establishing an international research network, and you are committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, accessibility and ethics of care in a university context.
- You have experience in delivering research-led curriculum and/or programme organisation at a graduate or postgraduate level and/or in informal education.
- You have some experience in experimenting with innovative teaching methods, including the use of process-orientated, critical and/or transversal approaches to pedagogy, collaborative practices, knowledge exchange, and digital media.
- You have excellent communication and organisational skills, and work well in diverse teams.
- You have a very good command of written and spoken English. A knowledge of German and/or the willingness to acquire this in the course of the first few years is encouraged.
