From online portals to newspapers and magazines to radio and podcasts – the diversity of our titles, brands, and genres is unique in the German media landscape. Equally diverse are the talents of our approximately 1,700 journalists and 3,000 media professionals, who shape the future of media every day across Germany with passion and innovation. #weareFUNKE
"For an open and informed society" – that's what FUNKE stands for.
With our twelve regional media outlets, including the Berliner Morgenpost, the Hamburger Abendblatt, and the WAZ, we inform, inspire, and reach people. We work toward this goal with passion, focus, and modern technology.
Our platforms generate over 100 million page views and 1 million hours of media time per month. In cross-functional teams, we develop data-driven products with measurable impact. If you're passionate about making data truly usable and actively taking responsibility, you've come to the right place.
As a Data Engineer, you will contribute significantly to the design of our data-driven projects and play a key role in our team. To strengthen our team in Berlin, Essen, or Hamburg, we are looking for you as
Data Engineer (m/f/d)
YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE - FULL OF POSSIBILITIES
- You develop and operate robust, scalable data pipelines and architectures in the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), thus creating the basis for high-performance, reliable data processing in the company
- You will work closely with analysts, data scientists, and product teams to connect data sources, understand requirements, and ensure optimal data flows
- You develop, implement, and operate reliable interfaces and data connections to internal and external systems – including automation, error handling, and monitoring to ensure stable and secure data exchange
- You ensure that our data processes are well documented, tested and monitored to ensure data quality and availability
- You identify optimization potential in ETL/ELT processes, data structures, and infrastructure components – and contribute your own ideas to continuously improve them
- You work with modern engineering practices: GitHub, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring and infrastructure-as-code are part of your everyday work
OUR TECH STACK
- Our infrastructure runs entirely on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and is based on a scalable, automated setup
- We store and analyze data in BigQuery, transform and model it with dbt – modular, versioned and tested
- Our pipelines are orchestrated via Cloud Composer (Airflow), while we manage infrastructure and resources with Terraform – declarative, reproducible and versioned
- We manage code, reviews, and deployments via GitHub, supported by GitHub Actions for CI/CD – including automated testing, linting, and execution of our dbt jobs
- We ensure data quality with dbt tests, individual logging and sophisticated monitoring including alerts
- For self-service analysis and reporting, we use Looker Studio, directly connected to our validated data models
WHAT WE WANT
- Data is your passion and you have experience with our tech stack – in particular, very good knowledge of SQL & Python as well as experience with ETL/ELT frameworks (e.g. Airflow, dbt or comparable tools) and database performance optimization
- Through your at least two years of professional experience, you have developed a good understanding of cloud data warehousing (e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake) as well as scalable data architectures in the modern data stack
- You have an independent and structured way of working – you independently identify problems and optimization potential in pipelines, infrastructure and data quality and proactively implement improvements
- You are interested in topics such as data contracts, automated testing, monitoring, data quality frameworks, security & governance and enjoy taking on responsibility to provide stable and high-performance data platforms together with the team
- Very good German language skills (at least C1) complete your profile
YOUR BENEFITS
- Creative freedom:Contribute your ideas and actively shape our data platform, tech stack and processes
- Further development:Strong learning and collaboration culture with coaching, workshops, trainings and conference visits via the FUNKE Academy
- Flexibility:30 days of vacation, hybrid working with home office and focus on a healthy work-life balance
- Events:Regular team events, bi-weekly lunch-and-learns and team lunches
- Innovation and impact:Become part of the digital transformation of one of Germany's largest media groups
- Community:You can expect an open team with a clear feedback culture and short decision-making processes
- Additional services:Corporate benefits, fitness offers, support for mental and physical health, subsidies for the Deutschlandticket and company bike
