Doktorand (m/w/d) – Untersuchung ultraschneller Magnetisierungsdynamik

Über diesen Job

The Max-Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) conducts basic research in the field of nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics arising from the interaction of light with matter and pursues applications that emerge from this research. It develops and uses ultrafast and ultra-intense lasers and laser-riven short-pulse light sources in a broad spectral range in combination with methods of nonlinear spectroscopy. The spectral range includes in particular XUV radiation and soft x-rays, where experiments at in-house sources are complemented with the use of accelerator driven sources such as free electron x-ray lasers.

With its research, MBI fulfils a national mission and is an integral part of the international scientific community.

PhD student (m/f/d) - Ultrafast magnetization dynamics probed by laser-generated extreme ultraviolet radiation

The Max-Born-Institute invites applications for a PhD student (m/f/d) in the field of Ultrafast magnetization dynamics probed by laser-generated extreme ultraviolet radiation

Job profile:

Ultrashort laser pulses can deterministically reverse the magnetisation of thin magnetic films without the need for any external magnetic fields. This fascinating observation is not only of great interest for data storage applications, where in the future individual bits may be switched with light pulses rather than with magnetic fields as employed today. It is also one of the most intriguing phenomena in current solid-state research; the underlying microscopic processes are only partially understood and discussed controversially. The goal of the offered PhD position is to experimentally explore the fundamental mechanisms on their intrinsic ultrafast time and nanometre spatial scale.

Over the last years, we have set up unique experiments based on high harmonic generation to directly access the element-selective magnetic response of thin film systems. Via high harmonic generation, intense ultrashort laser pulses generate soft x-ray radiation enabling ultrafast core-level spectroscopy on magnetic atoms such as Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. Building on this experience, we are currently setting up a state-of-the -art laboratory equipped by a high-power laser system with sub-10 femtosecond pulse duration. You will be part of our team to commission this new experiment and to perform ultrafast spectroscopy on functional, multi-element magnetic systems.

The project will be realized in a stimulating environment regarding the available experience and possibilities for national and international collaborations. Theoretical support by ab-initio electronic structure calculations is available in house. You will be part of a welcoming and experienced team at MBI and part of the Graduate School of the Collaborative Research Center "Ultrafast Spin Dynamics" (www.trr227.de (http://www.trr227.de/) ), offering unique opportunities.

Requirements:

We are looking for a student with a Master of Science or Diploma degree in Physics with above average grades. We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates, who enjoy working in a team environment and have hands-on experience in optical laboratory work. Experience with ultrashort laser pulses, soft x-rays, vacuum technology and data analysis software (e.g. Matlab, Phyton) is beneficial.

Offer:

The researcher position is available at the earliest possible date and fully funded for a 3-year PhD program. The payment is according to the German TVöD salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions (75%).

MBI is an equal opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. If equally qualified, severely handicapped persons are given preference.

MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as a family-friendly employer.

Please upload your application, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates and description of previous professional activities electronically via the MBI online recruiting platform at https://mbi-berlin.de/career (https://mbi-berlin.de/career) . The position is open until filled.

For further information about the position, please contact Dr. Clemens von Korff Schmising (korff@mbi-berlin.de (korff@mbi-berlin.de) ) or Prof. Stefan Eisebitt (eisebitt@mbi-berlin.de (eisebitt@mbi-berlin.de) ).

Bereitgestellt in Kooperation mit der Bundesagentur für Arbeit.
