The Institute of History of the University of Bern is seeking to fill a full time professor position (open rank) in History of the Middle Ages with consideration of digital Methods, beginning 1 February, 2027.

The successful candidate will represent the entire spectrum of medieval history (approx. 500–1500) in research and teaching and promote the use of digital methods in research and teaching. He or she should have at least two areas of expertise in the field of European medieval history, as evidenced by internationally recognised publications. A broad coverage of European history, particularly the High and Late Middle Ages, taking into account interregional interrelationships and contact zones, is desirable.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a willingness to actively participate in the development of trans-epochal research clusters at the History Department, in particular in a leading role in the 'Digital History' cluster. Furthermore, involvement in the interdisciplinary Master's programme 'Digital Humanities' at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg is expected. In addition to teaching a broad range of subjects and methods for 4 (assistant professorship) or 8 (associate and full professorship) hours per week and supervising BA, MA and doctoral theses, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in academic self-administration and collaborate with other disciplines.
Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, the position will be filled at the level of assistant professor with tenure track, associate professor or full professor. The requirements for appointment as an assistant professor are an above-average doctoral thesis, teaching experience and an advanced habilitation project. Upon successful evaluation, there is the prospect of permanent employment and conversion of the position to an associate professorship. The requirements for appointment to an associate or full professorship are a postdoctoral qualification or equivalent qualification, as well as experience in successfully acquiring third-party funding.
Knowledge of digital methods is expected; concrete proposals for new research projects involving digital methods are desirable. A sound knowledge of German, the primary language of teaching and administration, is expected and must be demonstrated within two years of taking up the position at the latest; a good knowledge of French, English and other languages is desirable.
In line with the objectives of the University of Bern, the History Department is seeking to increase the proportion of women in senior academic positions and therefore strongly encourages female academics to apply. Applications for job-sharing positions are possible and welcome, provided that a corresponding concept is submitted.
Applications with a letter of motivation and curriculum vitae, list of publications, details of previous teaching experience and a list of third-party funding acquired must be submitted by 19 October 2025.
