Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS, Bremen

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, Department Statistical Methods in Epidemiology, offers a position as a

Salary scale 13 of the German public sector salary system (TV-L)

The position starts as early as possible (administrative clearance permitting). The contract is initially limited to 3 years (extension possible), 39.2 hours/week (100% position). The position is generally suitable for part-time employment.

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS is one of the leading epidemiological research institutions in Germany and a member of the Leibniz Association. The position is in the Statistical Modeling of Secondary and Registry Data Unit. The research interests of the unit are new statistical methods to estimate the use, effects, and risks of medications based on secondary data and to estimate the progress as well as the survival of cancer. The unit has extensive statistical expertise for studies based on the so-called pharmacoepidemiological research database (GePaRD) that has been established at BIPS and on the Bremen Cancer Registry. In particular, the research focuses on strategies to avoid sources of bias such as the target trial approach (www.bips-institut.de/en/research/cross-departmental-working-groups/working-group-gepard-target-trials-for-causal-inference-gettcausal.html) and methods for dealing with time-dependent and/or unmeasured confounding.

We seek an excellent, open-minded, and team-spirited PhD candidate who is interested in statistical aspects of secondary data analysis and applications in epidemiology.

Responsibilities :

  • Develop new statistical methods for secondary data analysis and apply them to GePaRD data
  • Develop and prepare statistical analysis plans for target trial emulation in e.g. post-authorization safety studies and conduct the analyses
  • Publish and present research results

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in (Bio-)statistics or Mathematics
  • Experience in planning of epidemiological studies and/or the analysis of data from statutory health insurances would be desirable
  • Programming skills in SAS and R
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English; German would be desirable
  • Initiative, motivation, commitment, and scientific curiosity

We offer a structured PhD program, exciting research topics, a stimulating international environment, a good infrastructure, close ties to the University of Bremen, and an engaged, supportive, and cooperative team.

Disabled applicants will be given priority conditional on equal professional and personal qualifications. The institute strives to promote its employees’ work-life balance and has been certified for its family friendliness (audit "berufundfamilie”). We also offer additional support for international scholars to relocate to Germany through the Welcome Center of the UBremen Research Alliance.
