Become part of this mission! We have around 10 JVM squads (Java and/or Kotlin) that form the backbone of the search engine that powers trivago. There are dedicated squads for each aspect of delivering results that match a user’s search. Some squads build and optimise the processes that match the most relevant results from a catalog of 16 million items in a few milliseconds. Other squads are responsible for the algorithms that rank results so that users find their ideal hotel as quickly and as easily as possible. We have squads that process billions of price changes per day and own petabytes of data. Still, others are working to refine how we interpret user searches by maintaining our traditional engine and, in parallel, working to build on leveraging AI. We are not solving easy problems – that’s already been done.

How you’ll make an impact:

• Think big to design scalable and reliable software that solves the problems encountered in the ever-increasing data processing scenarios we have

• Build and optimise the solutions that trivago needs to stay far ahead of our competition by considering existing architecture and new industry developments

• Dive deep into architectural decisions and keep up-to-date with emerging technologies to maintain and enhance the technical roadmap both to your team and the broader company

• Collaborate and work closely with other backend, QA and concept teams to help achieve the company’s and the team’s objectives

• Ownership of the development cycle with an entrepreneurial spirit, from ideation, implementation and testing, to observation and maintenance

• Constantly learn by gaining knowledge within your team and across the company, share new insights and make your team and others stronger

What you’ll need to thrive:

• 1 – 3 years experience in backend development with Java or Kotlin

• Passion for working with people from all sorts of backgrounds – data scientists, product managers, front end and CEO’s

• Proactivity in proposing your own solutions to improve the experience of millions of users

• Fluency in English (our company language)

• An academic background in computer science, data science, mathematics or related areas

• An ownership mindset: "I build it, I run it”
