IBM Infrastructure is a catalyst that makes the world work better because our clients demand it. Heterogeneous environments, the explosion of data, digital automation, and cybersecurity threats require hybrid cloud infrastructure that only IBM can provide.
Your ability to be creative, a forward-thinker and to focus on innovation that matters, is all support by our growth minded culture as we continue to drive career development across our teams. Collaboration is key to IBM Infrastructure success, as we bring together different business units and teams that balance their priorities in a way that best serves our client's needs.
IBM's product and technology landscape includes Research, Software, and Infrastructure. Entering this domain positions you at the heart of IBM, where growth and innovation thrive.
Join IBM’s Global Hardware Development Team in 2026!
Are you passionate about shaping the future of computing?
At IBM’s hardware development lab in Böblingen, we engineer some of the world’s most advanced computer systems working together with our global labs in the USA, Israel, and India. We embrace modern development practices such as agile methodologies to drive innovation and continuously improve our processes. As part of our team, you will help build the next generation of IBM’s industry-leading servers. We offer a variety of student opportunities—whether you're seeking a part-time role throughout the year or a full-time internship. To help us tailor your experience, please indicate your preferred topic in your application.
Topic 1: Boosting Hardware Developer Productivity
IBM zSeries systems—commonly known as mainframes—are the backbone of enterprise transaction processing, relied upon by major banks, insurers, and airlines for their unmatched availability. At the core of these systems is the IBM Telum processor, one of the world’s fastest many-core processors, developed by the IBM Böblingen hardware team in collaboration with global labs. To support this cutting-edge hardware, we’ve recently transitioned our developers to a modern, containerized environment using VS Code, significantly boosting productivity and sparking momentum for further innovation.
We’re looking for motivated interns to help us enhance this development environment even further. You’ll work closely with hardware teams to understand their workflows. Your goal is to design and implement productivity tools—from custom language servers and debugger plugins to AI-powered coding assistants, from custom file viewers to extended code linters with custom rules. If you have a background in software engineering or UX and are excited to improve the daily experience of hundreds of developers, we’d love to have you on board. Apply now and help shape the future of chip development at IBM!
Topic 2: Agentic AI for Verification
Join us in shaping the future of project management with AI. The development of IBM Z processors involves over 800 engineers and 40+ project managers—an immense coordination effort that demands smart, adaptive tools. We’re exploring how agentic AI can transform our workflows by acting as digital co-pilots: analyzing project data, identifying risks, optimizing resources, and supporting real-time decision-making.
As an intern, you’ll collaborate with project managers, engineers, and AI experts to design and prototype intelligent tools that enhance planning, monitoring, and communication. Your work will make project data more accessible and actionable, helping teams stay aligned and proactive. If you’re passionate about AI, curious about project management, and eager to solve real-world problems, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now and help us redefine how complex hardware projects are managed.
Topic 3: Verification Infrastructure Modernization
We are running tens of thousands of simulation jobs 24/7 in our compute farm. The infrastructure to manage these runs groups them into projects / menu’s and lists, which then contain individual test setups. A complex piece of software called HDWB (hardware developer workbench) keeps track of the jobs that get to worker nodes, collects all results and presents them to the user.
As an intern, you’ll collaborate with key stake holders and users in this area. You’ll analyse our existing environment and investigate on how it could be turned into micro service based components, that allow us to more easily integrate cloud workers or containers running on our user desktops.
