Your team

You will be part of the Language Services Analytics Team in the Language Services Division of the Directorate General Communications. We provide translation, editing, proofreading and terminology services in all EU languages to support the ECB’s communication services and to help the ECB comply with its reporting obligations. We also offer advice on linguistic matters.
In your role as Data Science Expert, you will support data-driven strategic and operational decision making across the Language Services Division. You will also work closely with others in our Directorate General as part of cross-divisional teams, as well as with a number of internal and external stakeholders. The Analytics Team is part of the Language Support and Innovation Section and comprises four members of staff responsible for driving operational excellence across the Language Services Division and staying on top of the fast-moving field of technology in the area of languages.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Data Science Expert, you will:
  • perform initial investigations on datasets to discover patterns, spot anomalies or outliers, test hypotheses and check assumptions;
  • use statistical tools and data visualisation techniques to summarise complex internal datasets and provide key insights;
  • build predictive analytics models using machine learning algorithms;
  • prepare reports and dashboards, also with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI), to convincingly communicate findings to the various stakeholders;
  • use and experiment with different tools, techniques and technologies available at the ECB, such as R, Tableau and Power BI, to enhance data pipelines;
  • identify and acquire new datasets relevant to the Language Services Division’s operations and coordinate their integration into the Division’s custom Business Intelligence system, ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations and responsible AI practices.
For this role, we are seeking candidates who demonstrate potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their development of the required skills.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to apply data science techniques in a large and complex operational area within the Directorate General Communications. In addition, you will play a major role in consolidating and enhancing the product and service portfolio of a data analytics team using state-of-the-art tools and technologies.
You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in communications, data science, statistics or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ professional experience in an analytics team responsible for supporting data-driven strategic and operational decision making in the field of communications;
  • proven track record as an excellent communicator capable of drafting and presenting compelling and statistically-supported narratives to senior stakeholders from complex data;
  • extensive experience analysing communication content metrics using standard statistical techniques, such as inferential statistics, Bayesian statistics, time series analysis, multivariate analysis, analytical tools, such as R, SPSS and Stata, as well as strong database query skills, such as SQL and HiveQL;
  • strong familiarity with data visualisation techniques and proven experience with some of the market-leading tools, such as R, Tableau and Power BI;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
  • a PhD in communications, data science, statistics or business intelligence with a strong quantitative focus;
  • sound scripting skills in Python;
  • experience in designing and enhancing data pipelines;
  • proven exposure to AI solutions in the area of data mining and analysis;
  • familiarity with the General Data Protection Regulation.
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position
