The Institute of Material Systems Modeling of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is offering a 3-year PhD position in computational materials science and phase-field modeling. The PhD project will focus on developing a novel phase-field approach for modeling the solid-state sintering of magnesium alloy powders, implementing it using the finite element method, and validating it through both literature data and in-house experimental measurements.
Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
Your tasks
Your main task is to develop a novel phase-field approach that couples thermodynamics, mechanics, and fluid dynamics for realistic modeling of solid-state sintering of magnesium alloy powders. The objective is to deliver a reliable and robust model that captures the essential physical phenomena occurring during magnesium sintering and can serve as a predictive tool for sintering-based manufacturing processes. Numerical implementation of the developed model is planned to be carried out in a C++ high-performance in-house code built on the deal.1I and Trilinos libraries. You will also need to validate the obtained numerical results in collaboration with colleagues from various application areas, including experimentalists. Publications and presentations of your scientific results in international journals and at international conferences and workshops are also expected.
Your profile
You have a master's degree in materials science, computational engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics or a similar area. Solid knowledge in materials modeling, applied mathematics, and numerical methods (materials science, continuum mechanics, linear algebra, functional analysis, variational calculus, finite element method) is crucial. You need to possess very good programming skills in C++, experience with deal.II and/or Trilinos is a plus. Prior experience with phase-field methods is an advantage but not strictly required. Very good English is essential.
