The Institute of Coastal Ocean Dynamics at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is investigating the observation and quantification of ocean mixing, and its representation in ocean models. We therefore invite applications for a PhD student in the area of "parameterizing ocean mixing”. The position is initially limited for three years.
Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
We search for a qualified scientist to investigate the physics of ocean turbulent mixing and its representation in ocean models. The scientist will conduct research using machine learning and classical parameterization methods on data from ocean gliders equipped with microstructure turbulence sensors, turbulence resolving Simulations (LES). The analysis will be performed together with teams at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon that focus on ocean turbulence and machine learning as a part of the TRR181 Collaborative Research Centre
Your tasks
- analyzing measurements of ocean turbulence using autonomous glider vehicles
- use and develop machine learning methods to describe ocean turbulent fluxes
- developing theoretical and conceptual models to understand and predict ocean mixing
- work as an integrative part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and with external academic partners
- scientific publication and presentation
Your profile
- a Masters degree in oceanography, fluid mechanics, data science, or related disciplines
- a strong academic publication record
- excellent programming skills in Python or at least one other scientific programming language (e.g. FORTRAN, C, Matlab, R)
- good knowledge of English (written and oral)
- high degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure
The following qualifications would be desirable:
- experience using ocean turbulence models and observations
- international research experience
- good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians
