Your responsibilities

Join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), and more specifically the Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) Group. Your team will be in the Beam Machine Interactions (BMI) section which is in charge of Beam-Machine Interaction studies for all CERN accelerators and future accelerator projects.

As an Applied Physicist, you will be responsible for Monte Carlo calculations for the CERN injector complex and North Area.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Contributing to studies relevant for the operation, consolidation, and upgrade of beam intercepting devices, thus contributing to the safe and efficient operation of CERN accelerators.
• Conducting and analysing Monte Carlo simulations of particle showers to assess radiation impact on equipment and optimize mitigation strategies.
• Contributing to the development of machine models and simulation tools for the simulations of beam-machine interactions.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams of accelerator physicists, material scientists, and engineers to develop innovative solutions and mitigation strategies for our accelerators.

Your profile

Skills:

• Experience with simulation of radiation environments.
• Knowledge of particle-matter interactions.
• Knowledge of programming techniques and languages.
• Knowledge of at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA, etc.) is an asset.
• Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• You have a professional background in Nuclear or Particle Physics/Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
• a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
• or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
