Junior Survey Engineer (BE-GM-ASG-2025-171-GRAE)

Your responsibilities

The Geodetic Metrology provides metrology and alignment for all components installed in the accelerators, their beam transfer lines, and the physics experiments throughout the CERN complex. To meet the alignment requirements of upcoming projects, the group developed a prototype measurement system based on close range photogrammetry. This system allows automated alignment measurements. Initial testing has confirmed the system's performance and the next step is to transition this prototype into a fully operational system, supported by the deployment of two additional units.

You will be in charge of:

  • Collaborating with the team to test, validate and refine a photogrammetry-based measurement system, incorporating feedback from field use to enhance reliability and usability.
  • Identifying and evaluating new camera hardware and optics for integration into the production systems followed by thorough validation testing.
  • Creating comprehensive documentation, including assembly instructions and detailed procedure for installation and configuration of hardware and software components.
  • Building two production-grade systems based on the optimised prototype, in collaboration with CERN experts to integrate the system into the robotic environment.
  • Exploring enhancements using machine learning technologies for performance improvement and new capabilities to remotely measure more passive components using the current system or the LEICA ATS800.

You will be part of a multicultural diverse team working at the forefront of scientific research, working in a very stimulating environment that will help you develop your skills in high precision large scale metrology.

Your profile

Skills:

  • Knowledge and application of high-precision survey methods and tools: laser tracker, optical and digital levels, total station, close range photogrammetry;
  • Proficient level of programming skills in MATLAB and Python;
  • Knowledge and practice of standard compensation software: theories, concepts and algorithms related to the least square adjustment;
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies;
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities;
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Survey engineer (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 02.11.2025 at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-December-2025

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
