Mechanical Technician - Superconducting Magnets (TE-MSC-SMT-2025-145-LD)

  • Contract

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you motivated by precision mechanics and interested in contributing to innovative magnet technology for particle accelerators? Join us in building the next generation of superconducting magnets at CERN.

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group in the Technology Department (TE) is responsible for the design, construction, and testing of both superconducting and normal conducting magnets for CERN's accelerator complex. This includes magnet cryostat design, integration into accelerator systems, and quality control, and operational support for magnet performance and devices.

Within MSC, the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) section is responsible for advancing high-field magnet technologies for future accelerators. These advanced systems use superconducting materials with complex mechanical and electrical properties, with complex mechanical and electrical properties, presenting significant manufacturing challenges. Addressing these challenges requires the development of innovative materials, processes, and tooling.

Functions

As mechanical technician you will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on the design, development, and validation of new concepts, procedures, and tooling to produce small-scale models of CERN’s next-generation low temperature superconducting magnets. You will contribute to key prototyping activities for coil manufacturing and mechanical assembly in close collaboration with engineers and technicians.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Coil production: winding, preparation for heat treatment, preparation for impregnation and finishing;
  • Mechanical assembly: assembling structural parts, electrical connections, and instrumentation;
  • Inspection and testing: performing quality checks and functional measurements;
  • Tooling support: assisting in the design and refinement of dedicated tooling and assembly processes.

If you're passionate about precision engineering and hands-on prototyping, this is your chance to take part in innovative projects at the forefront of accelerator technology.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering or a related field or a related field.

Experience:

Proven experience in:

  • Mechanics, manufacturing techniques, and assembly of complex systems to tight tolerances;
  • Inspection, quality control, and testing of mechanical components to ensure compliance with specifications.

Experience in:

  • Prototyping and of first-of-a-kind systems development, including constructing of mock-ups and dedicated tooling.

The following experience will be an advantage:

  • Machining operations (e.g., milling, turning on a lathe);
  • Basic experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software for supporting the development of components and tooling.

Necessary training will be given when required.

Technical competencies:

  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
  • Integration of mechanical systems;
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
  • Knowledge and application of mechanical measurement techniques;
  • Reading of 2D mechanical drawings and 3D models, including ISO-GPS dimensioning.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in teams:
    • contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude;
    • addressing issues.
  • Demonstrating flexibility:
    • being willing to work on different projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrating accountability:
    • working conscientiously and reliably;
    • delivering on promises.
  • Learning and sharing knowledge:
    • being receptive to others' ideas and building on them.
  • Achieving results:
    • having a structured and organised approach towards work;
    • being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

This position involves:

  • A valid driving licence.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organisation.
  • Use of certain mobile work equipment or equipment used for lifting loads (lifting equipment, bridge cranes, aerial work platforms, etc.) requiring a driving authorisation
  • Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed
