The Department of Genomic and Applied Microbiology includes the Göttingen Genomics Laboratory, is led by Prof. Dr. Rolf Daniel and offers a fully-funded PhD position in animal microbiome- related research.
Project description:
The PhD project aims at providing microbiome- based approaches for improving the husbandry, feeding and health of suckling and rearing piglets for application in industry and practice. Fecal samples of piglets and sows from organic farming will be taken. The structure and function of intestinal microbial communities with respect to different feeding strategies will be analyzed. The focus will be on functional and pathogenic profiling. The total microbiota present in the feed, and sow environment and surroundings are also determined to track the extent and identity of microorganisms, which are present in the feed and environment and transmitted to the piglets. The project will use a combination of metagenomics, microbiome profiling, microbial culturing, and bioassays.
Your profile:
- Master’s degree in microbiology, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related fields.
- Hands-on experience with one or preferably more of the following is desired: molecular biology (eg, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, etc.), microbiology (isolation and characterization of microbes), bioinformatics (amplicon sequencing/ metagenomics).
- Strong interest in microbial communities and responses of these to changing conditions, host-microbe relations, impact of gut community on health.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
- Good communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- A fully funded 3-year position with a competitive salary according to the German public sector pay scale (TV-L E13, 50 %).
