Your tasks

  • collate the most complete global dataset of streamflow and springflow hydrometric and low- and high-frequency isotopic observations
  • identify and classify discrete precipitation-discharge events using interpretable machine learning
  • test the usefulness of hydrometric event signatures by comparing them to isotopic signatures at different aggregation levels
  • quantify functional resilience of different hydrological systems to the ongoing global change worldwide.

The candidate is expected to interact with the other PhD candidate from the HydroSIGNS project based at TU Dresden (https://tu-dresden.de/tu-dresden/arbeiten-an-der-tud/stellenangebote/stellenangebote?kat=2&style=cms2) to bridge the insights from large sample analysis and small-scale experimental measurements.

As part of the project the candidate will also support stable water isotope sampling of karstic springs in the vicinity of UFZ.

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in Hydrology and Water Resources, Earth System and Environmental Sciences and Engineering or similar
  • Strong programming skills (Python, R, Matlab, Julia or alternatives) or willingness to learn
  • Driving license Class B valid in Germany is mandatory
  • Proficient English skills
  • Experience with large datasets is an advantage
  • Experience with stable water isotopes is a plus
  • Curiosity, self-motivation, and enthusiasm for innovative research
  • Motivation to work in a closely integrated international and interdisciplinary team
