Über diesen Job
For many applications, there is an ongoing need to make use of higher frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum, which require technological innovations both for development and validation of new products. Therefore, NXP Germany is engaging in the German part of the EU R&D program "important project of common European interest” (IPCEI) for microelectronics.
As part of this program, NXP has built a brand-new laboratory for high frequency technologies in Hamburg: the "Terahertz Lab” serves as a system-level RF competence center supporting product development and innovation projects from multiple products lines. Further, new concepts for system-level RF validation are investigated in the sub-THz spectrum and beyond (frequency range ≥ 100 GHz). The Terahertz Lab will be a key player supporting innovation and development for the next generation of automotive radar, robotics, and the 6th generation of mobile communications (6G) within NXP.
Research Focus
The growth in demand for high data rates in modern wireless communications - especially in consumer connectivity - necessitates innovative solutions at higher frequencies. Conventional far-field antenna concepts, when adapted short-range scenarios, often fall short in predictability, performance, and scalability. This thesis will explore different approaches tailored to short-range, near-field, full-duplex communication systems operating at mmWave to sub-THz frequencies.
The thesis will investigate concepts for near-field communications, with possible applications in robotics, e.g. humanoids. For this purpose, novel antenna concepts will be investigated and optimized to enable application-specific near- to mid-range transmission. The performance will be evaluated with respect to relevant use cases.
Tasks
- Survey state-of-the-art antenna technologies at mmWave to sub-THz frequencies, as well as related topics, with respect to selected use cases.
- Compare possible solutions in terms of typical and relevant metrics such as reflection and transmission properties, isolation, bandwidth, sensitivity to translational and rotational misalignments, technical complexity and general manufacturing feasibility.
- Design and simulate selected structures using numerical full-wave EM tools (e.g., Ansys HFSS) and perform end-to-end system simulations using adequate system simulation software (e.g., PathWave SystemVue).
- Manufacturing of the developed test designs as well as evaluation and validation in a dedicated measurement setup (e.g., in a setup emulating relevant intra-robotic conditions) using state-of-the-art T&M equipment.
- Draft recommendations and conclusions for usability and feasibility with respect to selected applications.
- Assess practical integration potential for future transceiver chip designs (out-of-scope but noted for continuity).
Requirements
- Master student of electrical engineering, preferably with focus on RF technologies.
- Experience with RF measurements and equipment (oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, power sources, etc.).
- Experience with EM- and system-level simulation software, preferably Ansys HFSS and PathWave SystemVue.
- Experience in working with Python or MATLAB, preferably in the scope of electrical engineering and signal processing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and good analytical skills.
- Structured, well organized, self-motivated, and flexible.
- Team player with good communication skills, fluent English (spoken and written).
What NXP Offers
