Modeling & Simulation Engineer - Quantum Hardware (f/m/d)

eleQtron

eleQtron develops and operates full-stack quantum computers based on trapped-ion technology. Quantum computing is a new computing paradigm rapidly approaching commercial viability. Our unique approach combines laser-cooled trapped ions with microwave control and tailored magnetic fields. Our next-generation computing machines under development will be able to find solutions to problems that are out of reach today, thus enabling new innovative products and services for a brighter future.

We are looking for a Simulation Engineer (f/m/d).

Responsibilities:
As a Simulation Engineer (f/m/d), you will model, simulate, and optimize ion trap systems. The role involves high-accuracy simulations of electrostatic, RF, magnetic, and microwave fields, as well as ion shuttling dynamics and trapping potentials, using COMSOL Multiphysics. You will collaborate closely with interdiscplinary quantum engineers to translate physical designs into validated simulation models, guiding device development and workflow integration that support the company’s scaling strategies toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Electromagnetic & Field Simulations

  • Model static and time-dependent electrostatic potentials of segmented ion traps

  • Simulate RF (Paul trap) fields and derive effective (pseudopotential) trapping potentials

  • Compute magnetic field distributions, including gradients and field stability

Simulate microwave field distributions for qubit control and coupling
Ion Dynamics & Transport

  • Simulate single- and multi-ion dynamics in time-dependent potentials

  • Analyze ion shuttling protocols, including transport speed, motional excitation, and heating

  • Evaluate stability regions, secular frequencies, and micromotion effects

Modelling & Analysis

  • Develop parameterized COMSOL models to explore design trade-offs

  • Extract physical quantities (trap depths, frequencies, field homogeneity)

  • Validate simulation results against analytical models and experimental data

  • Automate simulation workflows where appropriate (e.g. via COMSOL LiveLink)

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Interface with experimental and theoretical teams to refine trap designs

  • Clearly document simulation assumptions, methods, and results

  • Provide actionable design recommendations based on simulation outcomes

Required skills:

  • MSc or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with strong understanding of ion trapping physics (Paul traps, pseudopotential theory)

  • Strong foundation in classical electromagnetism and classical mechanics

  • Experience simulating electrostatic, RF, magnetic, and microwave fields

  • Familiarity with time-dependent simulations and particle tracing/analysis

  • Experience with numerical and FEM-based simulation tools, such as COMSOL Multiphysics (AC/DC and RF Modules preferred)

  • Scripting experience (e.g. Python, MATLAB or COMSOL LiveLink); version control(e.g.Git) is a plus

  • Ability to critically assess scientific literature and technical reports, define validation strategies, and report R&D results in a structured and traceable manner

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in quantum information, trapped ions, or atomic physics

  • Knowledge of heating mechanisms, motional decoherence, or noise sources

  • Exposure to experimental ion trap setups or hardware constraints

  • Practical understanding of microwave engineering or RF electronics

What you can expect from eleQtron:

  • Competitive salary: We value our team members and therefore provide remunerations that reflect this, additionally rewarding achievements.

  • Flexible working hours: We offer personal freedom through a variety of flexible work schedules.

  • Team spirit: In our international and diverse team, and with our regular team events, having fun at work is simply part of the game.

  • Further development: We want to grow together and so we offer our team members’ needs-based, individualized further training as well as plenty of room for personal development.

  • Wellness Package: We offer health-promoting benefits such as fitness programs like UrbanSportsClub to support your well-being.

  • Moving Benefits: A warm welcome! We are happy to support employees who move for us with a bonus.

  • At the forefront: Work at the forefront of technology, where academic research meets commercial applications.

  • Modern workplace: We have a high-quality infrastructure with laboratory space, offices, and meeting rooms.
