Research Associate for the Project "Atom-scale characterization of nanowires and quantum hybrid devices” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
InstitutionFaculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics
Salary levelEGR. 13 TV-L
Start date01.08.2025, fixed until 30.04.2026 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Scope of workfull-time position suitable for part-time
Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
The aim of the project is to experimentally investigate structural and electronic properties of nanowires and quantum hybrid devices down to the atomic scale by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy employing atomically sharp single or multiple probe tips. The sample preparations and measurements shall be conducted in a multi-chamber ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system connected to a UHV-compatible cryostat hosting a low-temperature scanning probe microscope.
The job includes the maintenance of the low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope and the complex UHV facility, experimental data measurement and analysis, development of novel atomic-scale characterization methods, the presentation of the results at project meetings and international conferences, and finally their publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.
It is mandatory that the applicant has a strong record in the atomic-scale characterization of nanowires and hybrid quantum devices. The applicant must have experience in the preparation of clean surfaces and nanostructures by ultra-high vacuum-based surface science techniques as well as a proven experience in the method of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Furthermore, the applicant must have deep knowledge of nanostructure and quantum device physics.
