Research Associate / Process Engineer - Design and Development of a Modular Ammonia Pilot Plant

Would you like to actively shape the structural change in the Rhenish mining area together with us? With us you have the chance to join the newly founded Institute for a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy (INW) with your ideas right from the start. Together with the H2 demonstration region, the INW forms the "Helmholtz Cluster for sustainable and Infrastructure-Compatible Hydrogen Economy" (HC-H2). Here, scientific foundations are laid in the field of innovative hydrogen technologies in order to advance research and development approaches with high sustainability potential and attractive economic prospects. You will belong to the institute`s "Process and Plant Engineering for Chemical Hydrogen Storage” division (INW-4). INW-4 deals with process synthesis and validation of overall systems and processes for the production and use of chemical hydrogen storage systems.

Your Job:

  • Contribute to a pioneering pilot project in close collaboration with industrial partners, research institutions, and an interdisciplinary team
  • Design, develop, and optimize a modular, containerized plant for green ammonia synthesis incorporating innovative technologies (e.g., electrolysis integration)
  • Develop and assess process concepts for different reactor designs
  • Evaluate process variants with respect to efficiency and operational flexibility
  • Build models for steady-state amd dynamic process simulation
  • Plan and specify process engineering tasks and coordinate the procurement of equipment in collaboration with external companies
  • Implement processes at laboratory, mini-plant, pilot, and demonstration scale
  • Support the preparation of third-party funding and grant applications

Your Profile:

  • Master`s degree in Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems/Control Engineering (Cybernetics), Physics, chemistry, or a related field, with an above-average acedemic record
  • Solid knowledge of thermal process engineering, reaction engineering, thermodynamics, process design, and chemical technology
  • Strong interest in developing and implementing innovative technologies in close alignment with industrial partners
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor
  • Ability to analyze complex interdependencies and work in a methidical, structured manner
  • Experience with process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen Plus, Aspen, HYSYS, Honeywell UniSim, gPROMS)
  • Excellent command of English, bolt written and spoken
  • Independent yet strongly team-oriented working style

  • FAIR REMUNERATION: Depending on your existing qualifications and the tasks assigned to you, you will be classified in pay grade 13 of the TVöD-Bund (Collective Agreement for the Public Service).
