The University of Konstanz is one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany. Since 2007 it has been successful in the German Excellence Initiative and its follow-up programme, the Excellence Strategy.
We are looking for motivated (PhD or PostDoc) candidates with interest in novel areas of Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics, specifically the theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking in complex crystals.
We develop the theoretical foundations for mechanical, optical and thermal properties of binary crystals consisting of colloids or nanocrystal particles. In the project advanced approaches in transport and field theory shall be developed and analytically and numerically evaluated to investigate the role of Goldstone modes, their coupling via defect fields, and their consequences on transport in self-assembled metamaterials. Besides performing theoretical development and analysis, the PhD or PostDoc candidate is expected to work together with collaborating groups using ab initio methods and computer simulations in sharing theoretical methods and jointly generating and analyzing data. The candidate will thus gain a broad expertise in sophisticated theoretical concepts and techniques in Statistical Mechanics and modern Materials Science.
