W3 Professorship in Sensor-Based AI and Biosignal Processing (f/m/d)
As part of the cooperation between the University of Lübeck and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Institute of Medical Engineering (Director: Prof. Dr. Thorsten M. Buzug) within the Section of Computer Science/Engineering at the University of Lübeck invites applications for a permanent position at the earliest possible date for a

W3 Professorship in Sensor-Based AI and Biosignal Processing (f/m/d).

The appointment is subject to §§ 61 and 63 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the university role, the professorship will also assume a leadership role at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Individualized and Cell-Based Medical Engineering (Fraunhofer IMTE) following the "Karlsruhe Model". This professorship is part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein’s AI Professorship Program and aims to strengthen and promote innovative AI technologies at the interface between hardware and software.

The University of Lübeck and Fraunhofer IMTE have a long-standing collaboration in the development of smart medical technologies and systems. Their joint focus lies in transferring innovative solutions into practical applications to contribute to a healthier society.

We are seeking a candidate of international standing who will represent the field of Biomedical Signal Processing in both research and teaching. The professorship is located at the intersection of computer science, biomedical engineering, sensor technology, and microsystems technology. The focus is on the development of intelligent, sensor-integrated systems for the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of biological signals for medical applications in prevention, diagnosis, therapy, and rehabilitation.

The professorship is characterized by software and hardware innovation, with particular emphasis on combining AI methods with novel sensor principles. Central research topics include miniaturized, multimodal sensor systems with high sensitivity and specificity, based on established technologies (e.g., acoustic, optical, or mechanosensitive sensors), as well as emerging approaches such as flexible electronics, bio-inspired materials, or micro-/nano-structured systems.

The position is expected to actively contribute to the initiation and participation in collaborative research projects at the University of Lübeck, Fraunhofer IMTE, and partner institutions such as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Experience in acquiring third-party funding and working with industry partners is desirable.

In addition to a completed doctorate, candidates must provide evidence of additional academic qualifications, which may be demonstrated through a habilitation, a junior professorship, or equivalent scientific achievements within or outside the university environment.

We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding expertise in the relevant fields and is capable of representing the discipline in both the academic community and to research funders and industry stakeholders. Applicants are expected to provide evidence of internationally recognized scientific excellence, leadership experience, success in third-party funding acquisition, and teaching experience.

The University of Lübeck values and promotes the diversity of its members and welcomes applications regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion, worldview, disability, sexual orientation, or identity.

In accordance with legal requirements, female scientists will be given preference in cases of equal qualifications, aptitude, and professional performance. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified. Applications from individuals with a migration background are explicitly encouraged. Please do not include photographs with your application.

For the necessary documents and further details about the appointment process, please refer to:

Your application should include the usual documents (CV with academic background, list of publications and third-party funding, copies of certificates), as well as a short research and teaching statement for the position in Lübeck, and a half-page description of your three most important academic achievements.
