Airbus Defence and Space GmbH is offering an exciting Bachelor thesis opportunity for a highly motivated student to explore the application of 3D printing technologies for the fabrication of electrical circuit and/or relay boxes. This project aims to investigate the feasibility, advantages, and limitations of additive manufacturing in developing robust and efficient enclosures for critical aerospace components.

Your tasks and responsibilities
- Literature Review: Conducting a comprehensive review of existing additive manufacturing techniques relevant to the production of electrical enclosures, including material properties, design considerations, and post-processing methods.
- Design & Prototyping: Developing and optimizing CAD models for electrical circuit or relay boxes, specifically tailored for 3D printing processes, considering factors like material strength, thermal management, and EMI shielding.
- Material Selection & Testing: Researching and recommending appropriate 3D printing materials with relevant electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties for the application. Potentially conducting initial material characterization tests.
- Additive Manufacturing Execution: Operating or overseeing the operation of 3D printing equipment to produce prototypes of the designed enclosures.
- Performance Evaluation: Developing and executing test plans to evaluate the functional performance, structural integrity, and environmental resistance of the 3D-printed enclosures (e.g., thermal performance, vibration resistance, IP rating if applicable).
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyzing experimental data, documenting findings, and presenting conclusions in a comprehensive Bachelor thesis report.
- Collaboration: Working closely with engineers and specialists within Airbus Defence and Space to integrate project findings into ongoing research and development initiatives.
Desired skills and qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of 3D printing technologies and processes (e.g., FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF).
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor).
- Basic knowledge of electrical circuit design and component packaging.
- Familiarity with materials science principles, particularly as applied to polymers and composites.
- Experience with laboratory testing and data analysis is an advantage.Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (German is a plus).
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proactive and self-motivated with a strong interest in innovative manufacturing techniques.
