You have expertise in automation systems as well as software systems? You are passionate about technologies and concepts around automation engineering, industrial ecosystems, and digital twins? Then join our team of highly motivated researchers in our ABB Research Center in Mannheim and help shape the foundations of tomorrow’s ABB offerings.
In our ABB Research Center Germany, you will develop pioneering software technologies that enable future ABB products in automation and electrification businesses for a more sustainable world. You will collaborate at the intersection of industrial research and academia, working with partners across the globe.
- Initiate, lead, and contribute to applied research and technology transfer projects in collaboration with international ABB divisions, product development teams, customers, partners, and academic institutions.
- Continuously scout and adapt emerging technologies in automation systems, engineering tools, Industry 4.0, and digital twin ecosystems.
- Apply your expertise in automation and software engineering to industrial systems.
- Build prototypes to validate concepts and effectively communicate your work within ABB, to customers, and at scientific conferences.
- Protect intellectual property through patent applications and contribute to scientific publications.
- Actively develop your technical and interpersonal skills to advance your career.
Qualifications for the role
- Degree in automation engineering, computer science, software engineering, or a related field, complemented by either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in automation engineering / process engineering, Industry 4.0 technologies, or industrial software engineering.
- Knowledge in Industrial automation technologies (e.g., Asset Administration Shell, OPC UA, AutomationML, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, etc.)
- Practical experience in software design and development (e.g., .NET, C++, Python, Java).
- Beneficial: You proven track record in publishing research results at conferences and/or journals.
- Interest in consortia and standardization activities related to automation, process engineering, Industry 4.0 / digital ecosystems, e.g., as part of ZVEI, Plattform Industrie 4.0, Industrial Digital Twin Association
- Beneficial: German language skills (allows easier participation in standardization activities in the automation domain in German speaking regions)
- Beneficial: Domain knowledge in process automation / process engineering
- Beneficial: Knowledge in edge (and cloud) technologies
- Beneficial: Experience in project management
