We are UKM. We have a clear social mission and, with our focus on healthcare, research, and teaching, we bear a unique responsibility.
To meet our high standards every day, we are looking forward to your scientific support – ideally with you on board!
YOUR POSITION:
The CCSR Laboratory at the Institute of Bioinformatics, led by Professor Eberhard Korsching, is planning to open an PhD/MD position in January 2026. The CCSR group investigates systemic aspects of normal and cancer cell biology based on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data and related data sources to decipher all the core regulatory aspects of these cell types. Additionally, the group's research efforts focus on the basic aspects of the data itself, as well as their interpretation and quality.
The project is centered around a systems biological concept of the cell based on already known cellular regulation, molecules, and their quantity. The primary objective is to create a simple frame work suitable to be executed on parallel computing hardware to simulate an artificial cell based on prior knowledge of life science resources/data. Further optimization steps of the application framework should lead to mimic the basic systemic behavior of the cellular system. The dedicated project is embedded in the current research of the group on the behavior of cancer and normal cells in the human body system (homo sapiens). Side projects are focusing on techniques used to generate useful data from public raw data repositories, as shown in the recent publications of the group. Discussions on the theoretical level should be complemented by discussions on the wet lab level with people generating the data.
YOUR PROFILE:
We are looking for candidates who enjoy theoretical work but do not fear to understand wet lab work and to get into reliable contact with those researchers. So the discourse level is broad and communication skills are essential as well as capabilities for stringent literature search strategies. Basic research inevitably needs thought, attention to details, a precise working style, a significant time and energy commitment, ongoing motivation to read the literature, and the ability to tolerate frustration. The team will support you, but on the other hand, you will have to drive your project forward.
REQUIREMENTS:
- University degree (diploma or master's degree) in natural sciences, or applied mathematics, informatics, and medicine
- Basic programming skills in a Linux environment in Bash, C, C++, R and motivated to learn other associated techniques
- Strong interest in theoretical biology and wet lab technologies (even experience would be fine)
- Sufficient knowledge in English is essential
WE OFFER an enthusiastic research group with a stable and friendly work environment in which doctoral students (medical or natural science background) are encouraged to develop their skills and their understanding of nature, under the guidance of experienced senior lab members. The institute is very well equipped and smartly managed by scientists who understand what it takes to conduct cutting-edge research.
For inquiries please contact: Project leader, Eberhard Korsching, eberhard.korsching@uni-muenster.de with the subject "SIM 2026"
Apply now via our career portal until 29.10.2025, including
- Cover letter describing which scientific ideas you have already pursued in your practical bachelor's and master's thesis and what else might be of interest to you besides the planned project (more than 350 and less than 400 words, PDF file)
- Scans of the bachelor and master certificates and the credit/grade tables of those studies
