Scientist for Bioinformatic Analysis (f/m/x)
At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.
The Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at the University of Leipzig aims at uncovering the molecular underpinnings of metabolic, obesity and vascular disorders to enable precision therapies. HI-MAG is part of Helmholtz Munich.
As one of the world’s leading research centers, Helmholtz Munich is a highly driven and stimulating international environment. Together with renowned scientists and supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure, you will have the opportunity to make important contributions towards scientific knowledge and the improvement of people’s quality of life.
Your tasks
- Provide bioinformatics and statistical support to researchers and clinicians across the institute
- Conduct statistical analyses, data interpretation, and visualization of clinical trial datasets
- Perform comprehensive bioinformatics and statistical analyses of high-dimensional omics datasets (spatial, single-cell, and bulk)
- Integrate and analyze multiple omics layers (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics) to uncover biological mechanisms and identify clinical biomarkers
- Develop, maintain, and document analysis pipelines and software tools to ensure reproducible research
- Prepare data summaries, visualizations, presentations, and manuscript materials for scientific communication and publication
Your profile
- M.Sc. (plus PhD preferred) in a quantitative field such as Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related discipline
- Proven experience in analyzing and integrating multi-omics and single-cell data, ideally including work with clinical or patient-derived datasets and awareness of data protection standards
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or R, combined with familiarity with Linux/Unix, command-line tools, workflow management systems (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow), and HPC or cloud environments
- Experience with data visualization, pipeline development, and—ideally—machine learning or AI applications in biomedical or omics contexts
- Excellent communication skills in English, particularly in clinical and biological settings, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Self-motivated, well-organized mindset; experience with clinical data management systems (e.g., REDCap) or knowledge in obesity/metabolism research is a plus
If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years but may be extended under certain circumstances.
"We believe that diversity is the key to groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. Our flexible working models and remote options create a supportive environment for balancing work and family life. For us, contributing to a healthier society in such an inspiring workplace is truly meaningful."
