About us
The School VI of Medicine and Health Sciences comprises the fields of human medicine, medical physics and acoustics, neurosciences, psychology and health services research. Together with the four regional hospitals, School VI forms the University Medicine Oldenburg. Furthermore, the university cooperates closely with the University Medicine of the University of Groningen.
The project "TDP-43 & Compartment-Specific Quality Control" is part of a newly established, cross-site DFG research group.
The project investigates how the protein TDP-43, a key player in ALS and FTD, behaves in different cellular organelles. This position offers the unique opportunity to conduct research in a highly networked, international environment. The project is a co-operation between the University of Oldenburg and the University Medical Center Groningen (Netherlands). A substantial part of the experimental work will be carried out on site in Groningen.
Your tasks
Cross-border research: You will work actively at two locations. In Oldenburg, you will establish TDP-43 variants and carry out high-resolution microscopy. In Groningen, you will use specialised libraries (e.g. siRNA against Hsp70 cofactors) to perform functional screens.
Range of methods: Cell biological and biochemical methods for the characterisation of condensates, live cell imaging (FRAP, FRET), willingness to perform animal experiments (mouse).
Networking: Active participation in the meetings of the DFG research group, exchange with national partners (e.g. laboratories in Dresden, Hamburg) and international co-operation partners.
Your profile
Required qualifications :
- Education: Completed scientific university degree (M.Sc./Diploma) in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine or related subjects.
- Mobility: you enjoy working in an international context and are willing to spend a substantial part of your research time in Groningen (Netherlands) (commuting or temporary relocation).
- Expertise: Practical experience in microscopy, cell culture and molecular biology is essential.
- Language: Very good knowledge of English (working language in both labs) and communication skills.
Preferred qualifications :
- Basic knowledge of the German language
- Knowledge of working with chaperones or protein aggregation
We offer
- International experience at one of the leading centres for protein quality control in Europe (Groningen) as well as involvement in a renowned DFG research group (retreats, lab rotations).
- Payment in accordance with collective bargaining law (annual bonus, company pension scheme, capital-forming benefits) incl. 30 days annual leave
- Support and guidance during your induction phase
- A family-friendly environment with flexible working hours (flexitime) and the opportunity to work remotely on a pro rata basis
- Company health promotion benefits
- The opportunity to gain your own scientific qualification [doctorate].
- An extensive free further training programme and our own scientific career development programme ( https://uol.de/en/school6/early-career )
Our standards
The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance to § 21 Section 3 NHG, female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.
