Ph.D. Student: Spectroscopy of Soft-functional Materials and their Interfaces (F/M/D)

INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken

The Innovative Electron Microscopy Department develops and applies electron microscopy methodologies for nanoscale and atomic-resolution characterization of functional materials and their interfaces, with specific focus on soft-hard interfaces.

Ph.D. STUDENT: Spectroscopy of Soft-functional Materials and their Interfaces (F/M/D)

Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is nowadays routinely performed in scanning transmission electron microscopes, enabling chemical characterization of materials at the nanoscale. However, as a characterization technique for studying soft functional materials (polymers, organic crystals, coordination frameworks, etc.), EELS remains largely underutilized. The main goal of the project is to develop approaches for the chemical characterization/imaging of soft functional materials and their interfaces at the nano/atomic scale making use of information from different regions of EELS spectra. In this project you will combine state-of-the-art materials science and cryo-electron microscopy workflows, as well as apply ab initio calculations (in close cooperation with other members of the E-MOSAIC project team) to support the detailed interpretation of spectroscopical data, in order to understand the relationship between chemical composition, electronic structure and functional properties of studied compounds.

YOUR PROFILE:

  • We are looking for a highly motivated person (f/m/d) with Master’s degree in Chemistry/Materials Science/Physics or a closely related field, who is passionate about both physical chemistry and nanoscale characterization of materials.
  • Experience with material characterization using microscopy and/or spectroscopy techniques and corresponding data interpretation will be an advantage.
  • Having basic programming skills will be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, thorough command of the English language. German language knowledge is very beneficial.
  • Ability to work as a member of an international, multi-disciplinary team.

We offer excellent conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

  • An exciting position in a dynamic research team located on the attractive research campus Saarbrücken.
  • An opportunity to work with high-end microscopy equipment, including an aberration corrected transmission electron microscope equipped with state-of-the-art EELS spectrometer and direct electron detection cameras.
  • Strong support to perform high-quality research and to publish and present your research results (journals, national and international conferences).
  • A comprehensive benefits package (flexible working hours, mobile working, company pension scheme).

Desired starting date: as soon as possible, salary level E13 TV-L 60%, contract limited to three years (with possible extension).

We are looking forward to receiving your application (CV, a complete list of publications, one-page motivation letter, at least two letters of reference) by March 15th, 2026. Please use our online application system via https://www.leibniz-inm.de/en/job-offers-2/

Questions will be answered from: Prof. Dr. Nadja Tarakina (nadja.tarakina(at)leibniz-inm.de)
