PostDoc (F/M/X)
(full-time / 40h per week)
in the research group "Object Itineraries” (Head: A. Waldner) of the Department of Historical Archaeology (Head: M. Steskal).
The Austrian Archaeological Institute is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and an-cient studies. We study human history from the Quaternary period to modern times, taking into account material archaeological sources and the written tradition. The research group »Object Itineraries« is dedicated to the relationship between people and objects in antiquity. The focus is on researching the mobility of objects and groups of objects in geographical, chronological and cultural terms.
Your Tasks
- Collaborative field research within the framework of the Department's research programme and with a focus on the research in Limyra and Ephesos
- Establishment and implementation of own research projects within the framework of the Department's research programme
- Acquisition of third-party funds at national and European level
- Dissemination of research findings in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets and in the context of lectures, workshops and conferences
- Participation in the institute’s science communication activities
Your Profile
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Classical Archaeology or in a related field of archaeology
- Outstanding research expertise and publication record in the fields of Classical Archaeology and Pottery
- Studies with a particular focus on the Eastern Mediterranean
- Extensive experience in the scientific processing and evaluation of find materials, particularly ceramics
- Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds
- Experience in project management
- Experience in science communication
- Full professional proficiency in English and GermanFlexibility, the ability to work in a team, openness in scientific exchange and the willingness to undertake longer research stays abroad
Our Offer
The position starts on September 1st, 2025 and is advertised for 16 months and ends on December 31st, 2026. The annual gross salary for this position is € 69.020, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).
