Postdoc Position (f/m/x)

(full-time, 40h per week)

focused on the history and/or philosophy of scholastic traditions in Tibetan Buddhism, starting November 1st, 2025 or soon after this date.

Your Tasks

• Conduct independent research on the scholastic traditions of Tibetan Buddhism based on original language sources in Tibetan. The focus should be in the area of scholastic networks and/or specific tools and themes in scholastic literature. Consideration of the formative phase of Tibetan scholasticism is required in the first phase of employment (until 30.06.2026).
• Participate in data management of TibSchol prosopographical database and digital library
• Publish at the highest scientific level and present research findings at academic events
• Participate in the institute's activities by (co-)organizing academic events

Your Profile

• Completed doctoral degree or PhD in Buddhist Studies or Tibetan Studies
• Excellent knowledge of Classical Tibetan; knowledge of Sanskrit is an advantage
• Experience, demonstrated in publications and/or PhD thesis, in historical research involving Tibetan sources and/or philosophically oriented research based on Tibetan sources in original language; experience with sources in cursive script an advantage.
• Deep familiarity with the early Tibetan religious and scholarly context and the dynamics of intellectual exchanges. Familiarity with the relevant textual corpus as well as research in the fieldSkills in the use of digital humanities tools and high computer literacy (experience with TEI/XML a plus)
• Capacity to carry out research independently and as part of a team
• Excellent command of English (written and spoken) and strong inter-personal skills

Our Offer

• The annual gross salary according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is € 69.028,40 (before taxes). Funds for conference and travel are available within the limits of the institute’s budget.
