Über diesen Job
The Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a position in Leoben as
Senior Engineer (F*M*X) in finite element programming of materials
(40 hours per week)
in the framework of the FFG project "Breaking the Ice – novel energy efficient hybrid de-icing systems ” for a fixed term appointment for approximately 18 months (subject to project end date).
Within the currently running project, novel epoxy-silicone based coatings with covalently attached lubricants (CAL coatings) that are easy to apply, with good substrate adhesion and durability and show anti-icing performance have been created. However, thermo-mechanical simulations with finite element (FE) simulations are necessary to fully characterize and optimize the heat transfer within common aerofoils with and without hybrid de-icing systems from a company partner. The successful candidate will be responsible for generating the necessary FE models to fully explore the thermal conditions on aerofoils on the ground and in flight. Additionally, the candidate will take part in two weeks of wind and ice tunnel testing to validate the models.
Your Tasks
- Independent investigation and validation of thermo-mechanical and heat-transfer modeling of aerofoils with finite element modelling and programming.
- The ability to program experimental results (for example, material mechanical and thermal properties) using AFM, indentation, scratch, and bulge testing to the FE models
- Design and implement necessary materials related programming for wind tunnel tests and data analysis afterwards
- Manage the project data with an electronic notebook by implementing necessary APIs and templates. Determine workflows to share the data following FAIR data policies.
Your Profile
- Master degree, PhD or Engineering diploma in Materials Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related fields
- Extensive experience with Finite Element Modelling (minimum 5 years) – ABAQUS
- Experience with programming and research data management (Python, Matlab, Mathematica, SolidWorks, elabFTW) highly recommended. Additional experience with experimental methods an added plus (for example: AFM, indentation, scratch testing, bulge testing)
- Independent, responsible and team-oriented candidates.
- Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are mandatory. B1 level of German recommended.
Our Offer
We offer an international, ambitious environment for basic research-oriented candidates who want to perform cutting-edge research with access to world-class synthesis and characterization facilities. We have a friendly and dynamic research environment and strong collaborations with many international academic and industrial partners.
The appointment begins at the earliest possible date (approximately July 2025) and will terminate at the end of the project (approximately 18 months after start). Gross salary will be € 4.510,10 per month.
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
