Engineering Internship - AI/Data
Über diesen Job
🌟 About You
You’re in the final stretch of your studies (in particular graduated Master’s student or close to graduation) and you want a hands-on internship where you build real AI/data systems that ship to production. You enjoy working with messy data, writing solid code, and running experiments to improve search and LLM-powered features. You learn fast, take ownership, and like collaborating closely with a small team.
🚀 About Omnilex
Omnilex is a young dynamic AI legal tech startup with its roots at ETH Zurich. Our passionate interdisciplinary team is dedicated to empowering legal professionals in law firms and legal teams by leveraging the power of AI for legal research and answering complex legal questions. We work at the intersection of search, data engineering, and modern LLM systems—where quality, traceability, and user trust matter.
Tasks
🛠️ Your Responsibilities
As an Engineering Intern - AI/Data, you will support the team across data pipelines, retrieval/search, and LLM-enabled product features. Depending on your strengths, you’ll go deeper in one area while still getting exposure to the full stack.
- Data pipelines: Help build and improve ingestion and processing pipelines (APIs, bulk imports, parsing, normalization).
- AI-ready structuring: Support chunking, metadata extraction, citation handling, labeling/tagging, and schema design so downstream AI works reliably.
- Search & retrieval: Assist with indexing strategies, embeddings, hybrid retrieval, reranking experiments, and relevance tuning.
- Evaluation & quality: Build small eval sets, run experiments, analyze failure cases, and help turn findings into shipped improvements.
- LLM features: Prototype and implement pragmatic LLM workflows (summarization, classification, extraction, RAG components) with attention to cost/latency.
- Engineering fundamentals: Write clean TypeScript code, add tests where appropriate, and improve observability (basic metrics/logging) for pipelines/services.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and domain experts; document decisions and share learnings clearly.
Requirements
📌 Qualifications
✅ Minimum qualifications
- Near completion of your degree: You are at the end of your studies (e.g. finished Master’s program or close to graduating).
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (in progress) — or equivalent practical experience.
- Solid programming skills (preferably TypeScript/Node.js).
- Comfortable with data structures, algorithms, and working with real-world data (edge cases, messy inputs).
- Working knowledge of SQL (ideally PostgreSQL).
- Interest in applied AI/ML systems (LLMs, embeddings, retrieval, evaluation) and willingness to learn fast.
- Strong ownership mindset and clear communication in English.
- Availability full-time for the internship. On-site in Zurich at least two days per week (hybrid).
🎯 Preferred qualifications
- Experience with one or more of: search systems (Azure AI Search / Elasticsearch / OpenSearch), vector databases, or embeddings.
- Familiarity with data tooling (scraping/parsing, PDF tooling, OCR) and/or pipeline design.
- Experience with Docker and CI/CD basics.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (especially Azure) is a plus.
- Working proficiency in German.
- Swiss work permit or EU/EFTA citizenship.
Benefits
🤝 Benefits
- Direct impact: Your work ships into the product and improves real user outcomes.
- Learning & mentorship: Hands-on exposure to production AI/search/data systems in a high-ownership environment.
- Breadth: Work across ingestion → indexing → retrieval → LLM workflows → evaluation.
- Team: Join an interdisciplinary group at the intersection of AI, engineering, and law.
- Compensation: CHF 2’500–4’500 per month, depending on experience and skills.
