The EU-project “Eurostars”, a collaboration between Universities and Industries, aims in an improvement of existing cell culture lab ware. The role of the group at the ETH, which I guide independently, was to develop biological assays suitable during the development and in the production phase (QC). The project also included teaching of the personnel of the partner enabling them to perform the QC when the new product

The job entailed working in cloning, expression, purification and crystallization of recombinant proteins from different microorganism. Manipulation of protein crystals, and acquisition of X ray diffraction data in rotary anode and synchrotron equipments were also part of the duties.

During this period preparation of hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies, their characterization and culture in Hollow fiber bioreactor, were the main objective of the stay.

Duties involved developing of quality control method for controlling the production of the Cuban vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae.

Duties included quality control of monoclonal antibodies production, performed under GMP and GLP (ELISA, different protein quantification methods, PAGE, immobilization on chromatographic matrices, etc). A new quality control method to quantify by ELISA, the amount of toxic Protein A, remaining from purification process, was also developed and validated.
