Freelancing as software architect, software developer and technical project leader. The long-term projects I worked on are listed separately below. Smaller projects I worked on were mostly in the area of software and web development using Java and related technologies.

Solution Architect for the Anti-Financial-Crime (ACF) system. This was a business critical project (related to SEPA and Brexit), in which the AI-based ACF system had to be connected with numerous financial systems in order to perform a high volume of real-time ACF checks. Senior Java Developer working on a Scrum project developing a new system. The new system is centered around a geographic information system integrated with many sources of information.

LeanApps develops policy management software for life insurance companies. As an extension to their services they offer the financial system CODA. I designed and developed an interface from the insurance system to the financial system. This interface is currently operational for 3 customers of which the biggest has a portfolio of 2.5 million insurance policies, of which 800.000 are premium paying. Also I acted as the primary technical contact person for issues towards customers and the supplier.

Strawberries is developing a new webshop for a major clothing brand. For this webshop and for future webshops I've architected, designed and implemented middleware that enables the communication between the webshop, the payment provider, the fulfilment provider and the customer ERP system

Software Architect for the professional networking and job site YorZ.com. The scalable and extendable architecture of YorZ.com is based on Java using the powerful open source frameworks Spring, Struts and Hibernate. AJAX is used to make the user experience more friendly. The software development process included best practices such as short iterations, daily builds (Maven), unit tests (JUnit), performance tests (JMeter), automated functional tests (Selenium) and test coverage analysis (Cobertura).

Meirkat provided security software such as anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall software. I advised management on issues related to the project management of the offshored software development project, the quality of the software and on technical and security solutions.The management of Meirkat was based in Ireland, software development took place in China. Due to lack of funds the start-up Meirkat went out of business within one year of commencing.

Software Architect for Wepal, an open source Internet filter/parental control software. I defined the software architecture and created several prototypes to prove the effectiveness of technologies such as natural language filtering, image scanning, URL black lists and program control. The management of Wepal was based in Ireland, software development took place in India and Russia.

I took a gap year to travel. I traveled overland from the Netherlands to China through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal.

Worked as a consultant for Logica (previously named LogicaCMG). The various projects I worked on are listed separately below. Furthermore, I advised local management on technological developments, provided technical presales support and created and taught RUP and UML courses to colleagues. To train colleagues in use of the Rational development tools I followed train-the-trainer sessions at IBM Rational Software.

After the previous project for ISC I was asked to implement the RUP development process, combined with best practices such as test driven development and pair programming, in a different division of the ISC organization. I tailored the process to suit the organizational and project needs and coached project members to use this process. This was part of a greater plan to achieve CMMI level 3 compliancy.

Development of a new Java/J2EE system for use in criminal investigations for the Dutch police force. During the elaboration phase and the first construction iteration I was team leader for one of the two development teams consisting of 12 developers. After that the project grew to 70FTE and my role shifted to Software Architect. We used RUP as the software development process but also integrated elements from agile methods such as Scrum and XP.

Lead engineer on a project to develop a call centre application for the largest mail-order company of the Netherlands. Responsible for the development process (RUP) and the quality of the design and code. I also took the initiative to design and develop a generic persistency layer which saved the project a lot of time.

I worked on two different projects: the development of an on-line banking system and the intake of a insurance system built by a third party. After I discovered major security issues in running e-commerce websites I convinced management for the need of security assessments. I created a set of security guidelines for new applications and executed several of the assessments on running systems.

Development of a portal framework and the first portal for one of Wolter Kluwer's magazines. I was responsible for the Use Case model, the use cases and the user manual of the framework. I also designed and implemented the personalized portal functionality of the framework.

Development of a ‘printing on demand system’ with which magazines can be assembled and sent to a printing street.

Part of a small team responsible to define and validate the architecture for a new administrative system. I defined the persistency mechanism and implemented proof of concepts to validate the architecture.
