I conducted interviews (one-on-one) with applicants to Pembroke College for the Cambridge undergraduate course in Natural Sciences (typically ~ 45 interviews per annum). I critically assessed the performance of the interviewees which informed my overall assessment of their academic potential and suitability for the course. I engaged in decision-making discussions as to which applicants should be made offers. In addition, I also provided balanced and constructive feedback on unsuccessful applications.

- Research within the group of Prof. Spring centres on the application of organic synthesis to critical questions at the chemistry-biology interface. - I was tasked with research strategy development, the design of research projects, the preparation of publications and funding applications, and the promotion of group work to the wider scientific community. - I was actively involved in managing the research activities of a number of graduate and undergraduate students (typical group size ~ 40).

Responsible for the design and delivery of weekly teaching sessions ('supervisions') for first, second, third and fourth (final) year undergraduate students (taken either individually or in small groups) across a range of chemistry courses. Complex material had to be explained in an intelligible manner and my explanations needed to be tailored to students with a wide variety of abilities. This necessitated adaptability and excellent communication skills.

-Member of academic faculty. -Responsible for the design and delivery of two undergraduate lecture courses on synthetic organic chemistry: (1) a Part IB (second year) course with typically ~ 160 students per annum and (2) a Part II (third year) course with typically ~ 70 students per annum. The lecture courses were consistently rated highly by students (as assessed by Departmental feedback surveys). -Responsible for setting and marking examination questions for two undergraduate lecture courses.

Responsible for assessing the organic chemistry practical work of typically ~ 15 third year undergraduate students in Chemistry on a weekly basis. This involved one-on-one discussions with each student, during which time both important theoretical and practical aspects of the experiment in question were explored. This process served to illustrate to the students the applicability of their lecture material to practical work and helped the students to develop the skills needed in an experimental scientist.

- The University is a confederation of Schools, Faculties, Departments and Colleges. The Colleges are governed by their own statutes and regulations, but are integral to the make-up of the University of Cambridge. - Fellows are senior members of the College, responsible for the running of the College and maintaining it as a place of education, learning and research.

Responsible for monitoring the progress of Pembroke College undergraduate students studying chemistry courses (typically ~ 15 students per annum) and providing advice about their programmes of study. I also collated feedback from teaching reports and provided students with suggestions about areas of weakness. In addition, I was responsible for the selection of supervisors (teachers), with my decisions informed by student input and my assessment of students' individual learning needs.

I had overall responsibility for overseeing the arrangements for the admission of undergraduate students to study 'science' subjects at Pembroke College. I was responsible for reviewing applications (approx. 500 in total) to select the candidates to be interviewed. Working as part of a team, I helped to finalise interview arrangements. I analysed interview reports and oversaw discussions on which applicants should be offered places, informed by College and University admissions targets.

Worked in the Department of Chemistry on the design, synthesis and optimisation of selective 5-hydroxtryptamine 1B receptor antagonists for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). I was involved in the discovery of a novel lead compound which was capable of partially reversing PAH in a mouse model of the disease when administered orally.

Research included: (i) the use of diversity-oriented synthesis to discover new antibacterial agents and (ii) the development of new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of medium rings.

Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry supervised by Dr. David Spring (now Prof. David Spring). Thesis title: 'Reaction and Purification Strategies in Skeletal Diversity Construction'. CASE student sponsored by Pfizer and EPSRC.

Organic Chemistry
