Doctoral Positon (f/m/d) NEPS-Migration
The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), with about 250 employees, is an independent research and infrastructure institution for empirical educational research and a member of the Leibniz Association. The core of the institute is the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), the largest long-term educational study in Germany.
Your work environment
This team works closely with various institutes and educational institutions throughout Germany in conducting the NEPS. The position is assigned to the Working Unit Migration and is based in the NEPS Migration Unit, which designs and develops survey instruments for the NEPS study.
Your tasks
- Supervision of questionnaire modules on migration and ethnic educational inequality in the life course in all NEPS starting cohorts, e.g., perceived discrimination, ethnic identity, cultural capital, or social relationships
- Documentation and evaluation of existing questionnaire modules and development of new ones to explain the emergence of ethnic and migration-related educational inequalities, especially in (early) childhood
- Independent and team-based research to explain the emergence of ethnic and migration-related educational inequality and implementation of the results in lectures and publications
Further academic qualification with the goal of completing a doctorate, as well as conference presentations and publications in one of the following or related thematic areas are explicitly encouraged and will be supported to the best of our ability:
- Multilingualism as a resource and linguistic barriers as a source of ethnic educational inequality
- Educational pathways and transition decisions of young people with migration backgrounds
- Family resources and their significance for educational success in migration contexts
Your profile
- A completed master's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area (e.g., sociology, psychology, economics, or empirical education research)
- Very good methodological knowledge in the field of quantitative empirical social research and confident use of statistical programs (preferably Stata)
- Experience in questionnaire design and data collection as well as in the evaluation of large-scale longitudinal studies is an advantage
- In-depth knowledge of migration and integration research
- Interest in the analysis of ethnic educational inequalities and the intention to pursue a doctorate in this field of research
- Very good English skills, the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to work independently are required
