Charité Universitätsmedizin - Berlin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. The Institute of Virology is located in the heart of the vibrant capital Berlin (Charité Campus Mitte), and comprises approximately 100 employees and 9 independent research groups. The institute is home to an international team of researchers working on different viruses in a supportive atmosphere. Personal initiative, collegiality and a sense of responsibility are highly valued here. We are looking for a motivated and committed Ph.D. student to join the group of Dr. Oya Cingöz at the Charité Medical School in Berlin, Germany. The Cingöz Lab primarily investigates how retroviruses (such as HIV-1) replicate, their interactions with the immune system and how they target host factors that restrict infection. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and performing experiments, analyzing and presenting research data both internally and externally.
Overview of the position
The Ph.D studentship position is initially offered as a 3-year fixed-term contract and is expected to start in the Summer/Fall of 2025. Area of responsibility:
- Designing and performing experiments
- Detailed documentation and evaluation/analysis of experimental data
- Publication and presentation of research findings
- Keeping up to date on the relevant scientific literature
- Participation in weekly one-on-one meetings, group meetings, journal clubs and institute seminars
- Contribution to the common tasks within the group and the institute in general
Scientific employees will be given sufficient time for their own scientific work in accordance to §110 BerlHG.
What we are looking for
- Completed M.Sc. degree in biology or life sciences with focus on virology
- Track record of high-quality, original publications (including preprints)
- Experience in handling and culturing human pathogens at the BSL2 level
- Experience in all standard molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology methods (e.g. flow cytometry, immunoprecipitation, reporter assays, microscopy, protein biochemistry, cloning)
- Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
- Ability to work independently, creatively and carefully
- Willingness to work in biosafety level 3 laboratories
- Team-oriented and open-minded personality
- Interest in collaborating with national and international research groups
- Passion towards science, with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment

Information regarding the position
- Salary group E13 according to TVöD- VKA- K. The classification is based on qualification, the respective experience level is calculated from the years of professional experience. The annual salary (gross) is given for a full-time position without annual bonus, allowances and additional services
- The working time is part-time with 25 hours per week
