The Collaborative Research Center 1265 "Re-Figuration of Spaces,” which has been funded by
the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Technische Universität Berlin since 2018,
investigates the changes in socio-spatial orders that have been observed since the late 1960s.
For subproject B03 "Multiple Encapsulations: Gated Communities, Art Enclaves, and Child-Free
Spaces" (Prof. Stollmann/Prof. Löw) in SFB 1265 ”Re-Figuration of Spaces," we are looking for
a research associate (100%, postdoc position). The subproject focuses on the material and social
spatial structures of encapsulation as a response to and/or driver of social polarization. The
research builds on and continues investigations from the first (smart gated urbanism) and second
phases (safer spaces for LGBTQ+ communities) of the project. Two new foci are the enforcement
of child-free public spaces in large Korean cities and the settlement of artists in villages on Jeju-Do island.

The advertised position includes secondary and cross-sectional analyses of data from phases 1
and 2, ethnographic field studies, mappings, and interviews with protagonists and planners on
conflictual spatial production.

• Collaboration in the DFG research project "Multiple Enclosures: Gated Communities, Art
  Enclaves, and Child-Free Spaces” as part of SFB 1265 "Refiguration of Spaces.”
• The postdoctoral researcher is responsible for designing the survey instruments, conducting the
  data collection, and subsequently analyzing the data.
• Together with the project lead and the second postdoctoral researcher from architecture,
  he/she/they will ensure the successful implementation of the research design in terms of
  organization and content.
• The methods include spatial ethnography in South Korea (virtual and on-site), guided
  interviews with citizens and planners, image analysis, and the creation of joint spatial
  displays/mappings.
• The project combines knowledge from sociology and urban studies.
• The postdoc coordinates the interdisciplinary consolidation of results in the project process.
• He/she/they coordinates field access with the second postdoc and plays a key role in the
  creation of scientific publications.
• For the SFB, he/she/they take on coordination tasks in the area of internationalization and
  diversity.
• Active participation in the SFB on-site program in Berlin is required.

• Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) and PhD in sociology or related urban disciplines such as planning,
  urban design, or architecture.
• Proven knowledge of spatial theory and architectural and urban sociology is required.
• Demonstrable experience in the application of qualitative methods.
• Good knowledge of Korean required
• Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire any missing German or English language skills.
• Background knowledge in architecture and urban planning as well as skills in architectural
  representation are desirable.
