The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.). by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin ( https://www.fv-berlin.de/ ) and a member of the Leibniz Association www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de . You can find more details on the institute webpage: www.ikz-berlin.de .
The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung currently offers a
Researcher (f/m/d)
position for the topic
"Time-resolved Full-Field X-ray diffraction microscopy for imaging crystallization and defect dynamics in crystals and thin films”.
This project aims to upgrade the Full-Field X-ray Diffraction Microscopy (FF-XDM) instrument at the ESRF-ID01 beamline by achieving sub-25 nm spatial resolution and picosecond-to-millisecond temporal resolution for imaging lattice dynamics in crystalline materials and semiconductor devices. The project focuses on developing multilayer Laue lenses, surface-enhanced FF-XDM, and operando characterization techniques to study processes such as local laser annealing, dislocation dynamics, and surface acoustic wave propagation. The consortium includes Kiel University, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Fraunhofer IWS/IKTS Dresden, IKZ, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) .
The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of grazing-incidence FF-XDM , the development of a vacuum-compatible sample environment for in-situ local laser annealing, and the real-time imaging of surface-near processes in thin films, such as plastic relaxation, crystallization or ferroelectricity. This position requires regular visits to the ESRF for commissioning of the setup as well as close collaboration with Otto-von-Guericke University, Fraunhofer Dresden.
Requirements:
- Master`s degree or PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, with a focus on X-ray diffraction, synchrotron techniques, or thin-film characterization.
- Experience with synchrotron-based scattering and imaging methods (e.g., grazing-incidence diffraction, X-ray diffraction imaging)
- Strong data-analysis skills of large datasets preferably using Python
- Familiarity with vacuum systems, Computer-aided design, and laser-based experiments is advantageous.
- Self-management and ability to actively coordinate a team of scientists, technicians and students
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of German is not required but beneficial.
What we offer
The position is initially limited to two years. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (E13) (Treaty for German public service) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours). The IKZ is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports reconciliation of work and family life. There is equality for applicants of all genders. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.
