The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Bern (ISPM) performs research in a range of disciplines relevant to public health (www.ispm.unibe.ch). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioral health, biostatistics, and international and environmental health. The ISPM is highly reputed for its expertise in health effects of environmental exposures, the spread of infectious disease, and the health of vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.

The Climate Epidemiology and Public Health Group, led by Prof. Ana Maria Vicedo-Cabrera, addresses the impacts of climate, climate change and related environmental hazards on health with particular focus on the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies, and quantification of health impacts using novel methods in climate epidemiology.
We are looking for a data manager to support the team with data collection, cleaning, and processing across different projects.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Lead management of large datasets used by the group, including health and environmental data (i.e., gridded data).
  • Coordinate the data collection, with the preparation of applications and contracts with data providers and communication with them, in collaboration with the team lead.
  • Preparation of data management protocols and workflows.
  • Assist the team members in accessing and processing the data for their research purposes.
  • Implement methodologies to download large environmental datasets from open repositories.
  • Design and apply advanced methods in GIS and environmental epidemiology for linkage between environmental (i.e., gridded temperature) and health data at different geographical and temporal resolutions.
  • Oversee the data maintenance of the team, by ensuring the data accuracy, security and access.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of epidemiologists, statisticians, and environmental data modellers.
Qualifications and skills:
Mandatory:
  • University degree in data science or related field (bachelor's or master's degree).
  • Experience in the management of large databases in R, mainly health and environmental data.
  • Excellent knowledge of English, written and spoken.
Desired:
  • Knowledge of other advanced statistical software such as Python or ArcGIS (or related GIS programs).
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research in the areas of environmental epidemiology and statistics.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently and with interdisciplinary teams.
What we offer:
An international, multidisciplinary, and highly stimulating environment. Close collaboration with renowned experts in epidemiology, statistics and public health. Support for career development and training. Flexible working hours. Centrally located and modern offices in a nice building.
The post starts in February 2026 and is for 1 year, with a possibility of extension. Please apply no later than: 12th of January.

For further information on the position, please contact Prof. Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera (anamaria.vicedo@unibe.ch).
Please send your application in one PDF-file to Mirjam Egger, hr.ispm@unibe.ch. Applications must be written in English and include the following elements: letter of motivation and CV
