Start of employment: as soon as possible
This interdisciplinary research project investigates the role of epigenetic regulation and immune dysregulation in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By combining human retinal tissue analysis with innovative chromatin mapping techniques and zebrafish models of retinal degeneration, our goal is to uncover stage-specific epigenetic drivers of AMD progression. The project integrates molecular biology, histology, and advanced bioinformatic approaches to develop new therapeutic strategies that can halt or even reverse vision loss. The research environment is collaborative, translational, and at the forefront of retinal disease investigation.
- Prepare and process human FFPE retinal tissue samples for molecular and epigenetic analysis
- Perform chromatin accessibility assays and molecular readouts including PCR, qPCR, and Western blotting
- Establish the retinal degeneration model in zebrafish larvae and the follow-up handle
- Conduct histological and immunohistochemical analysis of retinal remodeling across AMD stages
- Apply bioinformatics and statistical tools (e.g., R, Python) for integrative analysis of chromatin accessibility, immune response, and retinal function
- Collaborate closely with Prof. Cerquitelli and his team at the Department of Computer Engineering, Polytechnic of Turin (Italy), who will lead the computational/bioinformatic analyses
- Engage in international scientific exchange, with the opportunity to spend part of the PhD research period at Polytechnic of Turin, gaining interdisciplinary training in computational biology
- Document laboratory workflows, support data reporting, and contribute to scientific publications
- Completed Master's degree in Molecular Life Sciences, Epigenetics, Immunology, Biotechnology, or related disciplines
- Solid background in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, Western blotting, and histological methods (tissue sectioning, immunostaining)
- Experience or strong interest in epigenetic assays and chromatin analysis
- Familiarity with retinal biology or neurodegenerative disease models is advantageous
- Basic knowledge of animal handling
- Proficiency in bioinformatics and data analysis using R and Python
- Excellent communication skills and experience working in multidisciplinary and international research teams
- Stimulating scientific environment within a leading Swiss biomedical research institution
- Hands-on training in advanced chromatin mapping methods and zebrafish retinal degeneration models
- Opportunities for scientific development including manuscript preparation and conference participation
- Unique interdisciplinary training with the possibility to undertake part of the PhD at Polytechnic of Turin, enhancing computational biology expertise and fostering international collaboration
