W2 Professorship for Evolution and Systematics of Microorganisms

Über diesen Job

Leibniz Institute DSMZ–German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures, Braunschweig

We offer a W2 Professorship for Evolution and Systematics of Microorganisms as a joint appointment of the Technical University of Braunschweig based on the ‘Jülich model’ (with reduced teaching obligations) with the Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH in the function of Head of the Department Microorganisms. The Department Microorganisms is located at the Leibniz Institute DSMZ on the Science Campus Braunschweig-Süd. The Leibniz Institute DSMZ–German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH is one of the world’s largest bioresource centers and a research infrastructure within the Leibniz Association. Its mission encompasses the provision, research, and utilization of microorganisms, cell cultures, and other biological resources. The appointment is for the earliest possible date.

Your responsibilities

The professorship is intended to strengthen the research focus on ‘Systematics and Evolution of Microorganisms’ at the Leibniz Institute DSMZ and to complement the profile of the life sciences at the Technical University of Braunschweig with an evolutionary biology perspective. In doing so, it should expand the existing focus areas of systems biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and neurobiology and actively participate in the expansion of systems biology in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute's partner institutions (Technical University, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research) in Braunschweig. The research should focus on the systematics and evolution of microorganisms, as well as on the integration of big data methods, comparative genomics, modern bioinformatics and artificial intelligence into the phylogenetic analysis and classification of microbial taxa. In particular, microbiome research is to be strengthened, new fields of application are to be opened up and microorganisms that are difficult to cultivate are to be made systematically accessible. Proven experience in the isolation and cultivation of novel microorganisms is desirable. The establishment of internationally competitive, third-party-funded research projects is expected. To this end, the successful candidate (f/m/d) will contribute to the development of structures at the DSMZ and the TU Braunschweig.

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ (www.dsmz.de) is one of the largest bioresource centres worldwide. The professorship also heads the ‘Department Microorganisms’. This Department is responsible for six curatorial departments with a total of 30 scientific and technical staff. In its current research, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ deals with fundamental and collection-related issues and has state-of-the-art technical equipment (e.g. next-generation single-molecule sequencing, flow cytometry with single-cell sorting, UHPLC-qTOF, 2720 core SMP server structure) and a stock of 40,000 different bacterial strains.

The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/hochschulentwicklung). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.

Our expectations

International experience in teaching and research, a very good command of the English language, and the ability and willingness to teach in English are expected. Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.

Requirements, § 25 NHG
