CARE – Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction is a prestigious Cluster of Excellence funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and jointly led by TUD Dresden University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University. Our mission is to revolutionize sustainable construction by integrating innovations in climate-friendly building materials, resource-efficient design principles, automated manufacturing technologies, novel digital methodologies, and integrated sustainability frameworks. By taking a holistic approach to construction, CARE aims to drive the transition to climate-neutral and resource-efficient building practices on a global scale. For TUD diversity is an essential feature and a quality criterion of an excellent university. Accordingly, we welcome all applicants who would like to commit themselves, their achievements and productivity to the success of the whole institution.

TUD invites applications for the following position within the framework of this cluster with starting date January 1, 2026:

Research Associate / PhD Student/ Postdoc (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

The position is initially limited to two years, with the option of extension. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). Balancing family and career is an important issue. The position is generally suitable for candidates seeking part-time employment. Please indicate the request in your application.

We invite motivated early-career researchers in fields related to sustainable construction to apply for multiple Research Associate positions. As a successful applicant, you will pursue independent, cutting-edge research aligned with CARE’s mission and contribute to our interdisciplinary agenda of reimagining construction for a climate-neutral future. Candidates from a broad range of relevant disciplines – including civil and structural engineering, architecture, environmental science, materials science, sustainability science, computer science (digital construction), and related areas – are encouraged to apply.

Requirements: Qualifications and Expectations

We are looking for talented, passionate researchers who meet the following requirements and are eager to push boundaries in an interdisciplinary setting:

  • Educational Excellence: For PhD positions, an outstanding university degree (Master or equivalent) in a relevant field is required. For Postdoc positions, a university and doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant discipline is required.

  • Scientific Curiosity: A strong interest in sustainable construction and a drive to contribute to high-impact research in line with CARE’s mission.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken (English is the working language of the cluster). Knowledge of German is a plus but not required.

  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Flexibility and willingness to work collaboratively in a dynamic, diverse team environment. An open mind to engage across disciplines and the ability to communicate ideas constructively are essential.

  • Analytical Ability: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a creative approach to addressing research challenges.

  • Independent Work Ethic: A self-driven, independent work attitude with a solution-oriented mindset and the initiative to lead research tasks responsibly.

What We Offer: Research Environment and Benefits

Joining CARE at TUD means you will benefit from an exceptional research environment and extensive support for your professional development:

  • Innovative Research Projects: Opportunity to work on innovative, high-impact projects that address real-world sustainability challenges in the construction sector, with scope to publish in top journals and present at international conferences.

  • Mentorship and Supervision: A dedicated supervision concept, including dual mentorship by experienced professors (often from different disciplines or partner institutions) to guide your research and career development.

  • Collaborative Network: As part of an Excellence Cluster spanning two leading universities, you will collaborate with experts across disciplines and institutions. CARE provides rich opportunities for international networking and exposure to a broad scientific community.

  • Training & Development: CARE offers a comprehensive training program to broaden your skills.

  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: You will conduct research using modern, state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment at TUD (and collaborate with facilities at RWTH Aachen and associated institutions), supported by skilled technical staff.

  • Flexible, Family-Friendly Work Culture: TUD is a certified family-friendly university and offers a supportive work environment. We provide flexible working hours and part-time arrangements if needed (please indicate in your application if you prefer a part-time position).

  • Equal Opportunity: We value diversity and inclusive excellence. We foster an open and respectful culture where everyone can thrive and contribute.

TUD strives to employ more women in academia and research. We therefore expressly encourage women to apply. The University is a certified family-friendly university. We welcome applications from candidates with disabilities. If multiple candidates prove to be equally qualified, those with disabilities or with equivalent status pursuant to the German Social Code IX (SGB IX) will receive priority for employment.

Please submit your complete application, using the subject line: "CARE-position_w25-198" by October 15, 2025 (stamped arrival date of the university central mail service or the time stamp on the email server of TUD applies) preferably via the TUD SecureMail Portal https://securemail.tu-dresden.de by sending it as a single pdf file to i.baustoffe@tu-dresden.de or to: TU Dresden, Cluster of Excellence CARE, Speaker, Prof. Dr.-Ing.
