Your main tasks

Participation in the DFG-funded project "Light- versus electron-induced spin-state switching of complexes on insulating layers” within the Priority Programme SPP 2491 "Interactive Spin-State Switching”

This DFG-funded project aims at investigating spin-crossover (SCO) complexes in direct contact with surfaces, where the interaction of the molecules with a metal substrate is gradually tuned by inserting an insulating layer of variable thickness. We will employ temperature, light, (tunnel) electrons, and soft x-rays to trigger the spin-state switching of the complexes. Using a combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and in collaboration low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the workgroup of Prof. Manuel Gruber (UDE), and first-principles electronic structure calculations in the workgroup of Prof. Carmen Herrmann (University Hamburg), we will address two core topics of the Priority Programme 2491: (i) the impact of the interaction with the local environment on the molecular switches and (ii) improving understanding of the switching mechanisms at the molecular level. This opens up unique opportunities in a highly interdisciplinary research environment.

The central task of the PhD candidate in this project is element-specific analysis of the influence of electronic decoupling on the spin-state switching of SCO molecules by characterizing the magnetic and electronic properties of spin-crossover (SCO) complexes. This includes participating in beamtime campaigns at synchrotron radiation facilities, taking measurements with UHV systems at Duisburg campus, preparing samples, and characterising them using techniques such as Mössbauer spectroscopy. It also involves analysing data and preparing publications.

Your profile

The applicant will have experience in surface physics, particularly in the fabrication and characterisation of molecular nanostructures on single crystalline surfaces under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Knowledge of X-ray absorption spectroscopy at synchrotron radiation sources would be advantageous. A university degree in physics of at least 8 semesters is required.
