Team Lead Protocols and Security (m/f/x) (100%)

Your Role
As Teamlead Protocols and Security, you will support us in further developing the core of the Threema apps and contribute to effectively protecting the privacy of millions of people.

Your Tasks

Lead a team of software and security engineers specializing in protocol design, cryptography, and product security:

• Provide coaching, career development, and regular performance feedback for team members

• Foster a positive, outcome-oriented team culture that emphasizes collaboration, personal accountability, and continuous improvement

• Hire and onboard future team members

Define and execute the technical roadmap for protocol design, implementation, and security hardening in applications developed by Threema, in line with the strategic goals of the company:

• Work closely with product and other engineering teams to align priorities, integrate security requirements, and provide protocol implementations for other teams

• Coordinate tasks, priorities, and deadlines within the team to ensure consistent delivery

• Report regularly on team progress to relevant stakeholders

Lead security research efforts: analyze emerging attack vectors, evaluate new cryptographic constructions, and assess protocol-level risks relevant to the product:

• Threat modeling for product features and protocol designs, working closely with the product team and other engineering teams

• Stay current with advances in cryptography, protocol research, and relevant academic work, and translate findings into actionable engineering improvements

• Build relationships with the security research community to collaborate on protocol analysis, inform product decisions, and strengthen the company’s security posture

Your Profile

Experience:

• Several years of experience in technical and personnel management of software or security teams

• In-depth knowledge of protocol design, cryptography, and applied security

• Experience in software engineering, ideally also practical experience with Rust

• Experience with threat modeling and security audits

• Familiarity with current research in cryptography and protocol security

• Bonus: experience in the field of formal verification

Profile:

• Ability to define and implement the team roadmap in line with strategic goals

• Strong communication skills: you can convey complex technical issues to different target groups in an understandable way

• Independent, structured way of working with high quality standards

• Fluent written and spoken German and English
