Job Offer from January 21, 2026

The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching near Munich is a world-leading research institution in experimental astronomy. Our research covers infrared and submillimeter astronomy, high-energy astronomy, optical and interpretative astronomy, as well as astrochemical studies. Our institute develops and builds scientific instruments intended for operation at large telescopes (VLT, LBT, ELT) as well as for integration into satellites (XMM-Newton, eROSITA, Einstein Probe, and SVOM).

Within the framework of the new ESA mission NewATHENA, MPE is responsible for testing the optics of the new X-ray satellite using its X-ray test facility PANTER. To meet the requirements of this mission, a new microfocus X-ray source is to be established, whose spatial and spectral properties must be determined and optimized. In addition, numerous optical measurements are to be carried out for other X-ray observatories such as eXTP and the AXIS project.

For our team at the PANTER X-ray test facility, we are seeking, at the earliest possible date, a

  • Preparation, execution, and documentation of measurement campaigns (optics, cameras, source), as well as support for data analysis
  • Responsibility for operating the X-ray test facility (vacuum system, X-ray sources, detectors, and other components)
  • Support of the facility’s IT infrastructure
  • Communication with our international project partners

Your Profile

  • Completed university degree in physics, engineering, or a comparable field
  • Experience with experimental setups, conducting measurements, and evaluating results
  • Experience in controlling laboratory equipment
  • Programming skills in common laboratory programming languages (e.g. Python)
  • Initial experience with vacuum technology is an advantage
  • Proficiency in English
  • Ability to work independently on projects as well as in a team

Ideally, you enjoy familiarizing yourself with challenging subject areas and already have experience in similar projects.

Our offer

You will mainly work at the PANTER X-ray test facility in Neuried.

The position is initially limited until July 31, 2028 . A continued employment beyond this date is planned.

We offer an excellent engineering and scientific environment and remuneration according to your qualifications and professional experience in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD).

Together with our engineers and project scientists, you will participate in exciting and cutting-edge developments in the field of space-based astronomy.
