Instrument Scientist / Postdoc for the Neutron Spectrometer PANDA

The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science – Neutron Methods ( JCNS-4 - https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/jcns/jcns-4 ) operates a suite of high-performance neutron scattering instruments at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum ( MLZ - https://mlz-garching.de/englisch.html ) in Garching near Munich. MLZ provides access to these instruments for scientists from universities and research institutions in Germany and throughout the world. Within the user program more than 1000 scientists visit the MLZ every year to perform experiments in the physical, chemical, biological and materials sciences. In addition, JCNS is actively pursuing a research program in the field of soft matter science and hard condensed matter physics.

Your Job:

The cold three-axis neutron spectrometer PANDA is one out of seven European neutron TAS spectrometers specialized for low-energy excitations in magnetism, lattice dynamics and hybridized modes. During the shutdown, several developments like AI-assisted data collection option (ARIANE), multiplexing secondary spectrometer (BAMBUS) and ADR cryostat were adapted to PANDA. We are looking for a new instrument scientist. Cold and hot commissioning will provide a unique chance to learn deeply about the instrument. The combination of user service and own research (30% of the instrument beamtime are reserved for inhouse research) will allow to develop a profile along your special interests. We would also support you in conducting high-class research in close cooperation with the JCNS sites in Jülich and Garching within the Institute for Quantum Materials and Collective Phenomena (JCNS-2).

Your tasks in detail:

  • Plan, perform and support high-end neutron experiments
  • Commission PANDA, its new BAMBUS multiplexing secondary spectrometer and the ADR cryostat
  • Lead the of state-of-the-art data management and analysis for BAMBUS and ARIANE within the PANDA team and in cooperation with CAMEA (PSI) and the European TAS community
  • Provide local contact support for users of the neutron spectrometer PANDA of JCNS at MLZ
  • Contribute to the instrument development of PANDA to meet future experimental challenges
  • Conduct and disseminate world-class research via publications and conference presentations
  • Represent and actively work on increasing the user base at MLZ

Your Profile:

  • Master`s degree and subsequent PhD degree in Physics, Quantum Phenomena or a related discipline
  • Experience in the application of neutron scattering methods for the investigation of the structure and excitations in condensed matter systems
  • Experience and technical interest in neutron instrumentation
  • A proven track record in inelastic neutron scattering research
  • Experience in multiplexing TAS would be appreciated
  • Experience in supervision and teaching at various levels
  • Experience in acquiring third party funding would be appreciated
  • Very good command of written and spoken English (at least B2 level according to the CEFR: https://go.fzj.de/languagerequirements ), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level. Knowledge of the German language is not mandatory but certainly appreciated
  • Initiative character, creativity, good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, result orientation and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player in the PANDA group, at JCNS and in the European neutron scattering community
  • Readiness to work on-call-duty during the user operation periods
