Mechanical Fabrication Engineer (EN-MME-MA-2025-136-GRAP)

Your responsibilities

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which owns, maintains and develops the 40 years old know-how on the mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly of accelerator and detector devices.

Are you passionate about fabrication using state-of-the-art technologies? Are you skilled in both manufacturing techniques and mechanical assembly? Then this is an opportunity for you: you will be part of a multidisciplinary team creating a large variety of equipment and components used at CERN, in the framework of a wide range of research and development projects. The activities will be focusing on the construction and assembly of mechanical systems for radio-frequency crab cavities and related auxiliaries for the HL-LHC project, being performed at CERN and throughout an international collaboration of Institutes. CERN, take part!

As a Mechanical Fabrication Engineer in the MME Group, Machining and Maintenance Section (MME-MA), you will participate in:

  • Follow up manufacturing projects of RF mechanical components and cryomodules for the High Luminosity Project.
  • Discuss with project stakeholders (such as design office) and participate to the identification of the make-or-buy strategy to decide what will be fabricated via CERN production facilities or via industrial partners.
  • Participate to the assembling of the equipment.
  • Review bill of materials and perform inventories to guarantee readiness of equipment for assembly.
  • Lead activities related to fabrication, such as defining and procuring suitable raw materials, prepare fabrication sequences including QA-QC.
  • Manage subcontracted productions via external firms.

Your profile

Skills:

  • Experience with 3D and 2D technical drawings: ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO GPS tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards).
  • Experience in application of fabrication methods and work preparation.
  • Experience in mechanical components assembly, good knowledge and understanding of fabrication techniques and their application to the design process.
  • Knowledge of metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • Experience with CAD tools (preferably CATIA) would be an asset.
  • Initial experience with quality management processes: knowledge of quality control procedures and standards applicable to mechanical production such as metrology and/or NDT.
  • Knowledge of mechanical fabrication in the following domains would be a strong asset: pressure vessels, radio frequency, vacuum chambers, and/or cryogenics.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 05.10.2025 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-February-2026

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.
