Mechanical Engineer (TE-CRG-CL-2025-148-GRAP)

Your responsibilities

The Cryogenics (TE-CRG) group, within CERN's Technology Department (TE), is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and produce a prototype detector module for the ALLEGRO ECAL Project.

ALLEGRO is a general-purpose detector concept for the future FCC-ee accelerator, featuring a noble-liquid electromagnetic calorimeter as one of its central detectors.

As a Mechanical Engineer in the TE-CRG/CL section, you will:

  • Finalise the engineering design studies and carry out thermo-mechanical calculations for the ECAL prototype.
  • Coordinate interfaces between prototype components.
  • Produce prototype components.
  • Assemble the prototype.
  • Perform quality control and assembly tests to validate the design.
  • Contribute to the final production and assembly of the prototype for testing in a particle beam.

You will work with a high degree of autonomy, while collaborating closely with physicists, engineers, and technicians across multiple domains. You will also prepare clear technical reports and presentations documenting your work.

Your profile

Skills:

Essential skills:

  • Proven experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software for thermal and structural simulations (ANSYS preferred, but not mandatory).
  • Ability to analyse and interpret simulation data to guide design decisions.
  • Knowledge of design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment.
  • Proven experience with 3D CAD software (CATIA preferred, but not mandatory).
  • Ability to produce accurate 2D drawings and 3D models, with knowledge of ISO dimensioning and tolerancing standards.
  • • Ability to work autonomously and with flexibility in a multidisciplinary environment.

Desirable skills:

  • Initial experience with the assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.

Language skills:

  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 09.10.2025 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-January-2026

This position involves:

  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organisation.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.
