  • Full-time

Your responsibilities

Join the Electronic Systems for Experiments (ESE) group at CERN to contribute to the functional testing activities for the Hybrid circuit production of the CMS Phase-2 Outer Tracker Upgrade and to the R&D effort on advanced interconnects. In these two projects, you will gain experience in the qualification and production of state-of-the-art instrumentation being manufactured for detector upgrades and in cutting edge technologies for 3D packaging.

Key Responsibilities In the framework of the first project:

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including hardware, software, quality control and physics experts to define and implement quality requirements, monitor and improve test system performance, handle fault analysis and implement corrective actions, and provide feedback to the industrial and collaboration partners.
  • Provide technical support to the collaborating teams and high-tech industrial partners in the operation and upgrades of the test system.
  • Plan, support and organize the repairs and re-qualification of faulty test hardware.
  • Analyse test data and prepare dashboards and trend reports for the industrial partners and the CMS collaboration.

In the framework of the second project:

  • Contribute to the evaluation of 3D interconnect techniques applied to custom designed ASICs.
  • Develop the firmware and software for FPGA-based test systems for 3D interconnect evaluation.
  • Present your work at international conferences and expand your professional network within the wide High Energy Physics community and a large-scale R&D programme.

Your profile

Skills:

  • A team player who can thrive in a complex and technically challenging project as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in software development in Python and C++.
  • Knowledge of software development management techniques (e.g. continuous integration and version control).
  • Knowledge of PCB design and basics of PCB manufacturing technology.
  • Experience in using laboratory instruments (oscilloscopes, power supply, multimeter etc).

Advantage to have:

  • Experience in development of functional test systems for electronics.
  • Experience with SQL databases and data analysis.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electronic engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
