Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications. They may also pursue doctoral studies outside of working duties.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, managing and carrying out the different aspects of the project, which include the preparation of samples, experiments in the lab and at large scale facilities, data analysis and communication with the different groups involved and project results may be used in the context of doctorate. The superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) R&D program mainly focuses on the improved operation of accelerators. The related investigations are additionally funded by a dedicated BMBF research project and will be carried out in close collaboration with the Helmholtz Centre DESY, one of the world's leading research centers for accelerator physics. An important aspect is the tailoring of the properties of the inner niobium cavity surface. To better understand the so-called Mid-T bake, a recent discovery of a cavity surface treatment, a thorough investigation of material and SRF parameters of niobium samples will be pursued. Your task will mainly include: Surface characterization of samples with advanced material analysis techniques (SEM/EDX, EBSD, XPS, XRR, XRD) and correlate those results with SRF properties obtained in AC/DC measurements. A special focus will be on the characterization and correlation on the level of single grain surfaces.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
Knowledge of surface analysis techniques preferable, knowledge in superconductivity, metallurgy or accelerator technology is of advantage, good knowledge of English is required and knowledge of German is of advantage.
